INTRODUCTION
Greater percentage of people in the developing countries consults the native medicine man or the traditional herbalist when they fall ill. Some buy drugs from the pharmacist or undertake to treat themselves, while others are too ignorant to know when illness they suffer from is serious and demands attention. Basic Health Services provided by heath care staff are comprehensive health care services, and health development of community depends on accessibility and quality of basic health services. (Chatbin CM, 2009).
Basic health staff including community health workers have been providing maternal and child health care, nutrition promotion, school health, environmental health, expanded programme of immunization and activities for controlling diseases such as TB, Malaria, HIV/AIDS, leprosy and other communicable disease. Also collect data on health and health related information and report monthly for monitoring, supervision, midyear and yearly evaluation. (Yardley Jh et al, 2010).
Basic health service section, public health division of department of health is responsible for administration and management of Basic Health Staff and also responsible for implementation, supervision, monitoring and evaluation of Basic health care activities especially for rural areas through primary health care approach. (Major SN, 2010).
It refers to in and out of area emergency services, inpatient hospital and physician care, outpatient medical services, laboratory/radiologic services and preventive health service. (Code de Virginia, 2012).
It is a care delivered by health professionals, (provider or practitioners) in allied health professions, which include physicians, physicians associates, dentistry, midwifery, nursing, optometry, pharmacy, psychology and other health professions in order to work towards providing primary health care to individuals. (Dungy CI, 2010).
OBJECTIVES

- Know her roles in the delivery of basic health services
- Know at least 5 benefits of basic health services in midwifery.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE TOPIC
This topic will:
- Help to enlighten the society about the need to seek basic health services when illness occurs.
- Enable the midwife to know her role in the delivery of health care service in the hospital and community.
- Increases the knowledge and skills of the midwife towards the care of her patients.
- Reduces the risk of morbidity and mortality rate among women and children in the society.
OPERATIONAL DEFINITION OF TERMS
Basic: This refers to the fundamental or elementary process that serve as a baseline for further actions.
Health: State of being free from physical or psychological disease, illness or malfunction.
Service: This is a care rendered to a patient in order to assist in preventing illnesses; restore and maintain their health.
Benefit: This refers to the important or usefulness of something.
Midwifery: This is a practice or science that deals with the care of a woman from pregnancy, labour and pueperium.
