Concern has been raised about the phenomenon of traffic accidents on the Abuja-Lokoja highway because of the lives lost and the socioeconomic impact. This study used secondary data from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kogi State, and Federal Capital Territory (FCT) sector commands covering the years 2003 to 2012 to examine the factors contributing to traffic accidents along the Abuja-Lokoja highway. Commercial drivers were given questionnaires in seven (7) different motor parks, totaling 120 copies. Only 98 copies, though, were successfully located and deemed suitable for analysis. Descriptive statistics and trend analysis were used to analyze the data that was produced. The analysis’s findings indicate that the majority of the problems are primarily caused by human-related factors. a mishap in the research area. Similar to other vehicle types, cars and buses are frequently involved in traffic accidents. Additionally, the majority of traffic collisions happen during the day, particularly between the hours of 6am and 6pm. To solve these issues, the FRSC and other government agencies involved in road management should step up their efforts to educate the general public, particularly drivers, about the importance of driving safely. Additionally, there should be a daily monitoring patrol by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO) to check for driver excesses along the route.
1.1BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY
Man has become more mobile and liberated thanks to transportation, and his growing reliance on motorized transportation has given him great advantages in all of his endeavors. Road travel is the most dangerous of all modes of transportation, and traffic accidents are its most distressing side effect (Sumaila, 2013). One of the main causes of death on a global scale is the phenomenon of road traffic crashes (RTC). According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 2005, at least 1.2 million people die and 50 million are injured each year as a result of RTC, a death toll that is comparable to that of malaria and tuberculosis. More than 85% of these fatalities take place in developing and middle-income nations. Road traffic accidents cost developing nations a staggering 1-2% of their GNP on average. This estimate only considers the direct economic costs, which are primarily productivity losses, rather than the total social costs, which are frequently acknowledged by industrialized countries; as a result, its impact on the poor may not be equally distributed. Poor individuals, such as pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists, are frequently at risk for RTC in low- and middle-income countries. Due to the lack of separation from other road users and the increased variety and intensity of the traffic mix, they are particularly at risk. In Kenya, pedestrians and transit users made up 80% of all fatalities, and in Mumbai, India, pedestrians made up 78% of road fatalities (WHO, 2005)
