ABSTRACT

This research on “construction of a wireless bass guitar” is a concept borne out of the desire to practice the art of construction of musical instrument based on the music Instrument Technology studies/training received in the University. The researcher embarks on this work by sourcing for materials from the local environment for the construction of a western musical instrument (bass guitar) with a remarkable difference as a contribution to the world of music technology. The research design include descriptive and experimental which enabled the researcher to embark field work for materials, interview with a furniture maker, library and internet sources for proper documentation and construction of the bass guitar with a spectacular design.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1       Background of the Study

Music technology is the approach to the making or construction, care and maintenance of musical instruments. It is a branch of science that seeks to bring out innovations and techniques in the musical instrument for a better performance. This study deals with the construction of a bass guitar with a creative innovation.

The construction of any musical instrument such as the construction of the four-string wireless bass guitar. The guitar is a western musical instrument in the stringed instrument family.

It is common knowledge, following the present trend of creativity and innovation from students of music technology that in the next ten to twenty years some musical instruments such as the guitar may no longer be imported. The wireless bass guitar is placed basically with the fingers and resembles the doubles bass.

The idea of innovation in this construction came from one of the innovator of the bass guitar in the 1990’s name Leo Fender of the United State. Leo Fender developed the bass guitar using the idea of Paul Tutmane on the double bass. Leo used many parts for the bass guitar and called the instrument, the “Fender Precision Bass”. He used the word precision in the naïve because his instrument had metal frets on the neck, while the double bass was fretless. The frets of the bass guitar made it easier for musicians to play precision note. His bass guitar became very popular, and many bass guitars are still designed to look like Fender’s Precision Bass till date. Thus, this researcher follows Fender’s knowledge of technology to create an innovation in making a bass guitar that is wireless.

1.2       Statement of the Problem

In Nigeria, guitar in the market are western oriented and those that are constructed within Nigeria also follow the western design and concept, and when compared with the western original, they look somewhat interior, with low price value less derivability span and low market patronage. The guitar being an important instrument in band ensemble sometimes causes upset and noise in the course of connections using cords. With these and other noticeable problems, this researcher/technologist sets to construct a bass guitar that will be durable, cost friendly and easier to fit into the band set up, without cords or wires.

1.3       Objectives of the Study

The general objective of the study is to create an innovation in the construction or a wireless bass guitar. The specific objectives of the study include;

  1. To construct a wireless bass guitar.
  2. To create an innovation that will stand the test of time.
  3. To document the design and the steps taken in the construction to serve as resource material.
  4. To display the finished product and also demonstrate on it to prove its innovation and ordinarily.

1.4       Significance of the Study

This creative study will be significant in the following ways;

  1. This work will serve as a resource material for both teachers and students of music instrument technology.
  2. The design, knowledge and skill adopted for this work could as well provide information for researchers as well as students whose area of interest is in music technology.
  3. This work if taken beyond this level (outside the school situation) could provide employment opportunity.
  4. The study serves as motivation to local and indigenous instrument makers to help them update and improve on the quality of materials used in the construction of musical instruments in order to attract a wider patronage.

1.5       Scope of the Study

The study is concerned with the construction and making of a wireless bass guitar and the innovation employed through technological devices in order to aid sound audibility.
