CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
The teaching of Christian education is required for the understanding of God’s plans and intentions toward a happy marriage and home. Marriage is a covenant by which a man and a woman establish between themselves life partnership which nature is pioneered toward the good of the spouses, procreation and education of offspring. Christian education teaches that God’s primary purpose for marriage was for unity, complimentary and oneness. Nevertheless, looking in depth to what is obtainable today; the researcher discovered that the reverse is the case as some marriages are hell on earth. The partners are like prisoners living inside big cages without gates (Browning, 2001).Christian couples even sue each other through church disciplinary committee, in traditional courts and in appeal court of law (1 Cor. 6:1-8).
When God first instituted marriage in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 2:15), it was meant to be an everlasting union filled with pleasures from the Garden of Eden until sin set in and altered this plan. When God instituted marriage, He intended it to be held in honour and high esteem. The couples are meant to be one and demonstrate this purposefully. There have been reoccurring cases of divorce, out-of-wedlock births and father absence due to globalization as well as same-sex marriages or civil unions and cohabitation of people without a marriage contract in Nigeria recently (Browning, 2001). Whereas, from the earliest days of the Christian faith, Christians have honored holy matrimony (as Christian marriages are referred to) as a divinely blessed, lifelong, monogamous union, between a man and a woman.
Christian education must be passed from one generation to another as God places so much value on his words. Christian education is essential and a necessity in attaining marital stability in Christian homes. Christian education reveals the most vital biblical perspectives on marriage and marital live in a Christian homes. It unveils in a broader scope what are to be expected of intending couples right before they steps into marriage. It presents marriage and family together in form of a unique societal sphere of close relations. This unique sphere can be explained as a sphere of love, stewardship, self-denial, obedience and restoring this sphere will enrich family life at large and could provide a positive solution to the emerging crisis in marriages today. The quality of information accessed by couples through Christian Education during marriage counselling determines the level of successful marriages in various matrimonial homes (Ubogu, 2011).
Christian education is the study of God’s revelation to human beings through scriptures, the person of Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit (The Trinity). Christian education is seen as one of the means to restore moral and social order in our society including Christian homes. Christian homes are presently in chaos and some at the verge of divorce while some are already experiencing divorce just because they neglected premarital counseling before entering into marriage. In addition, the researcher also noticed that 40% out of 100% of Christian marriages today collapse within three (3) or four (4) months after the wedding, which was as a result of lack of exposure to premarital counseling, that is why the majority of them find themselves in this marital conflicts. However, the remaining 60% are enjoying their marriages because of the important steps they took about premarital counseling before they entered into marriage (Browning, 2001).

A typical example of a Christian home is one that is line up with biblical principles and one in which each member understands and fulfills his or her God-given role. As the Holy Bible realistically acknowledges that those who marry are likely to have pains and grief (1 Corinthians 7: 28), no couple or marriage is immune to such inherent problems. Today, the greatest challenge in Christian homes is that often times the blames are pushed on the church, where some members would accuse the pastor of inability to safe-guard his member’s marriages. In some cases it leads to both the divorced parties leaving the church entirely to avoid in-house gossips from church members. Therefore, this study intends to look into the effect of Christian education on Christian home in Abuja North District of Assemblies of God Church.
1.2 Statement of Problems
Despite the church involvement in resolving marital crisis in Christian homes, cases of divorce and marital disputes is still on the high side. Marital disputes assume different ways. Rarely, they get worse into divorce. Most often, however, they are conflicts fought in delicate ways such as verbal abuse, stoic silence, open criticism, ironic comments, threats, humiliating comments and unresponsiveness. Such common strategies are wrong because they tend to weaken a marriage. The effective teaching of morals and ethics that could help sustain marriages are deeply rooted in Christian education which most marriages in Nigeria need to survive. A close look at what is happening in Abuja North District and in some of Christian home, it is certain that some marriages have led to divorce and face numerous marital crisis because most of the couples low knowledge of what Christian education teaches about marriage before entering into marriage. This means that the religious teachings of Christian education is a necessity for every couple which intends to have a happy home, which is vital as it determines how a home will look like either sweet or bitter. This study intend to bridge the literature gaps that exist on the role of Christian education in marriages by examining the effect of Christian education on Christian home in Abuja North District of Assemblies of God Church.
