INTRODUCTION

  • Background of the study

A teenager is a young person whose age falls within the range of 13 to19 years they are called teenager’s because their number end with teen. Merriam Webster (1828) biologically, a teenager falls between the stages of infancy and adulthood.  Also a teenager is a being between the stage of birth and puberty legally, a teenager is refers to a minor, or somebody who is yet to become an adult. Everything  that a teenager sees in a media affects them in many ways .Emphatically , every sight a teenager has behoove emulation , be it positive or negative . A teenager who is exposed to violent movies respond actively to the ideology induces by the movie characters. As an interact process through the mass media in which persons or group related to each other, share information ,experience and culture. Mass media consist of the various means of conveying information heterogeneously and simultaneously, with the aid of radio television, newspaper, internet, films etc. However, the aim of communication   by the media on its audience is to influence their behavior. Research has shown that there is a twelve percent increase in aggressive behavior after watching violent behavior,(Tompkins,2003)still ,Aimee Tompkins (2003) adds that every viewer that watches four (4) hours a day, put in less effort  at school , have poorer reading skills, plays less with friends, have fewer hobbies and activities and are more likely to be overweight” Cesarone Bernard (1994) highlights’ the American Psychology associations three major effect of watching violent media (films, television, etc.) “Teenagers become less sensitive to pain and suffering of others, teenagers may be more fearful of the world around them and teenager may be more likely to have in aggressive or hurtful ways towards others However, at the other hand, critics of video games claim that watching violent film is less detrimental due to the teenagers not physically playing out the violent. Still maker of those violent movies argue that violent teenagers are drawn toward the violent movies. These people believe that the teenagers must have been exposed to more than just the programming in order to exhibit behaviors that they may have seen in films (Cesareone, 1994) This research is therefore design to find out whether violent movies have a negative or positive impact on the teenagers of uyo local government area.

1.2 STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

The inability to select what one exposes ones minds to can pose a greater danger to oneself the ability to distinguish reality from illusion and fantasy is the problem this research seeks to solve. Violent movie has become a problem on teenagers in that, what they see on violent movies are taken into practice by them. With this their attitudes and behavior seem to be more aggressive and arrogant. It is also noticed that academic ability of teenagers is dwindling and most often is attributable to length of time they spend watching television, while their behavior seems not to conform to societal moral standard. Therefore this study sought to out what motivate teenagers to watch violent films and the impacts of violent movies on the teenagers of Uyo Local Government Area.

1.3 OBJECTIVES OF STUDY

This research work is targeted to achieving the following objectives.

  1. To find out what motivate teenagers to watch violent films.
  2. To find out how violent films can affects the behaviors of teenagers.
  3. To find out the amount of time spent by teenagers on watching  violent movies
  4. To examine the influence of violent movies on teenagers

1.4 RESEARCH HYPOTHESES

For the successful completion of the study, the following research hypotheses were formulated by the researcher;

H0:   there is no influence of violent movies on teenagers

H1: there is influence of violent movies on teenagers

H02: there is no amount of time spent by teenagers on watching violent movies

H2: there is amount of time spent by teenagers on watching violent movies

1.5 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The study looks at the effect of violent movie on teenagers. The study does not dispute the fact that the television which is one aspect of the media is also very beneficial to learning and development process, and as a matter of facts, goes a long way in socializing children by helping them blend more easily into the society due to the amount of information passed on to the children through well co-ordinate motion pictures with various contents and story lines. As a medium of communication, films are influential media and have the capacity of sending a wrong message or impression to the viewing audience especially children in their vulnerable stages of growth. Moreover, such impressions could spell a big problem to the entire society owing to the fact that children learn more easily from what they see or observe than from what they hear. However, as every research work is expected to add to the existing knowledge, this study should serve as a referencing material to students and other researchers who will be carrying out research on related studies. Also Nigerian film makers will benefit from the information contained here as a yard stick to measure the level of their weaknesses and compare it with the strengths they have which could serve as a guide to correcting their weak points for a better future of their products and the society at large. This study’s significance is also justifiable on the grounds that it will contribute largely to the understanding of the negative effects of films or the malevolent nature of some home videos towards our contemporary society, which would spur film makers to improve on the quality and the contents of the movies produced. Parents will also become aware or be exposed to the negative effects of movies and how they can influence their teenager’s behaviors both on the long and short run. This would cause them to seek means of controlling their teenager’s viewing habits and be conscious of what they watch and the themes embedded in these movies. Resultantly, this would reduce the negative impact as well as the level of malevolence caused by movie watching in our contemporary society. The suggestions in this work will hopefully help film makers try to adhere to National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) laws by differentiating the age ratings for various movies, while the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation will also try to review and censor the movies before they get into circulation. And the parents on the other hand will ensure that children watch only the movies specified for their various ages. This study is significant because it seeks to investigate these issues of negativity in movies and their effects on children and the society.

1.6 SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

The scope of the study covers effect of violent movies on teenagers. The researcher encounters some constrain which limited the scope of the study;

  1. a) AVAILABILITY OF RESEARCH MATERIAL: The research material available to the researcher is insufficient, thereby limiting the study
  2. b) TIME: The time frame allocated to the study does not enhance wider coverage as the researcher has to combine other academic activities and examinations with the study.
  3. c) Organizational privacy: Limited Access to the selected auditing firm makes it difficult to get all the necessary and required information concerning the activities

Chapter two highlights the theoretical framework on which the study is based, thus the review of related literature. Chapter three deals on the research design and methodology adopted in the study. Chapter four concentrate on the data collection and analysis and presentation of finding.  Chapter five gives summary, conclusion, and recommendations made of the study
