ABSTRACT

The study on, “Hero of the democracy”, is a portrait painting of Goodluck Ebele Jonathan using periwinkle shells as support is a studio exploration which attempt to exploit the concept of periwinkle shells in an artistic expression. Apart from creating an aesthetic work of art, the study also promotes and encourages the use of available natural materials thus lessening the usual constraint associated with the use of conventional media. Information and materials were gathered through the magazines, sketch photographs, and the internet. This study was achieved through the studio exploration in line with the use of visual elements as is applicable to portraiture. It is recommended that the outcome would add to existing painting support as visible base for painting.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1     BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Democracy is a system of processing conflicts in which outcomes depend on what participants do, but no single force controls what occurs and its outcome. The uncertainty of outcomes is inherent in democracy which makes all forces struggles repeatedly for the realization of their interests being the devolution of power from a group of people to a set of rules.

Conceding to defeat is the best solution to avert political crisis in a country. The ability to honorably accept defeat by political contestants goes a long way in avoiding unnecessary political chaos. Conceding to defeat by any candidate who will lose the seat they were vying for will help restore confidence in the political and economic realms of the country. Candidate refusal to accept defeat trickles down to cause animosity.

The immediate past president, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has been a good example of this act. The well-educated politician who was born in November 20, 1957 in Otueke, to a family of canoe makers in the eastern region of River of River State which has now metamorphosed into Bayelsa State conceded to defeat in the 2015 presidential election to his challenger Muhammadu Buhari. That singular act of the averted political crisis in the country… According to daily post, September 8, 2017. “Jonathan recalled how to once declare that his political ambition was not worth the blood of any Nigerian.”

Jonathan’s conduct is definitely an act of statesmanship and heroism and that he deserves all the recognition that accolades applies and vastly elevated moral statue that has come with that singular act.

Over the years, artists have developed various ways of expression using varieties of material as a support. In the light of this development, the researcher explored the use of periwinkle shells as a support for painting “The Hero of Democracy”, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan’s portraiture.

1.2     STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Artists are always on the search for new media of expression. The use of conventional painting support is a well known material base that has been overstretched. Hence, the quest for unconventional media of expression by painters has led the researcher to explore the periwinkle shell as a support in painting. However the research creates awareness that painting can be enhanced through the use of periwinkle shells as support for painting.

1.3     AIM OF STUDY

The aim of this study is to explore the possibility of using periwinkle shells as support for painting.

1.4     OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The objectives of the study are to:

  1. Explore the use of periwinkle shells as support for painting.
  2. Developed a support for painting other than the conventionally known support.
  3. Create aesthetics through portrait painting on periwinkle shells as support.
  4. Make a portrait painting of hero of democracy.

1.5     SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study will not only give aesthetic satisfaction but will also provide a firm ground for an effective way of exploring periwinkle shells as a support in painting. Therefore the significance of the study is depicted in its contribution to scholarship by allowing researchers and students who wish to carryout studies on the exploration of periwinkle shells to benefit from this study’s outcome.

1.6     DELIMITATION

This study is delimited to visual representation of Nigeria’s immediate past President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan through the exploration of periwinkle shell support. The study is delimited to 120 x 180cm surface. The study is delimited to the use of photograph and not from actual model.

1.7     LIMITATION

In the course of carrying out this research work, certain limitations were encountered. Firstly, getting enough periwinkle shells to suit the desired result of the researcher, a lot of shells were lost during washing and some had been broken and had bad shape. Secondly, the researcher could not access the ex-president for question because of protocol demands.
