Abstract

Communication system is the backbone of a society. Due to technological boom in media the mindset of common masses is changing every day. Everything is feed them in the form of entertainment. Even now a day, news is also presented in a very eye-catching manner. Infotainment is now a popular term. Entertainment world in Nigeria is a huge entity. Television penetration has been increasing such a way that this media became the most powerful communication tool in a country like India. During last couple of decades, the wave in Indian soap operas has flown the culture into a new, very different and unique dimension. The trends of Zee world TV serials have been able to revolutionize the values of our society. In this world the portrayal of women is a very delicate issue. This research is an effort to study the popularity of the Zee world drama series among married women in Apapa Lagos. The study determines the level of acceptance of women image that is portrayed in TV serial at the common platform of the society.

                                        CHAPTER ONE

                                        INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the study

In Nigeria, there are several societies where women are treated as the oppressed segment in terms of economic, social and political grounds. ‘Exploitation, denial of due dignity and respect to women and rejection of equal rights to education-employment’ has become a common phenomenon in the recent time. In the name of religion and other societal compulsion, the woman is usually appeared as scapegoat. Women empowerment movement came into existence very prominently by 1960s, which result the up gradation of social status of community as a whole. It can be said that Indian women are facing more hindrances and obstacles in the realization of their basic rights than the women in any other part of the world (Khan, 2011). But the strong existence of media has made it comparatively easy. The entertainment industry of India is one of the biggest industries in the world. Bollywood films have already achieved a special space in world’s entertainment industry. Huge popularity, huge involvement of money has created a distinguished trend in the history of entertainment. It can be referred the example of recently released film Dhoom-3 where over all box office collection was made at about Indian rupees 284,00,00,000 and overseas collection was $26,640,000 (List of Bollywood films, 2013). Likewise the Indian television industry has been contributing enormously in terms of catering entertainment messages. Experimental broadcast of Television was started in Delhi on 15 September, 1959 (Television in India, 2013). At that time, Doordarshan (DD) was the only television channel to watch, which broadcast two hours a week. The journey of Indian Soap operas began in the eighties by telecasting Humlog (1984) with the colossal recognition. Subsequently Buniyaad (1986-86), Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi (1984), Ramayan (1987–88) and Mahabharat (1989–90), Bharat Ek Khoj, The Sword of Tipu Sultan and Chandrakanta were aired that got mammoth popularity.

The golden era of Indian cinema saw it accepted far across the oceans and in the brick and corrugated film houses all over post-Independence Nigeria.

Up till the time that some of us were born and raised, Indian movies were still very much the rage. Who didn’t want to be Mahd? Who didn’t want to be Amar, Akbar, Antony? Who was not scared shitless by the snaky femme fatale Nagina?

The movies had a huge influence on Nigerian entertainment at the time: our own actors and musicians wanted to be them so badly. There were blatant remakes of Indian movies and quite a few songs were ‘Nigerianised’ off their soundtracks. It took concerted efforts by a new crop of movie makers to create a proper Nigerian film industry that in 20 years has created superstars and truly Nigerian films that are now appreciated world over. But while we’re jubilating and throwing around reports that say we’re the largest film industry in the world or that we’re nearly overtaking Bollywood (depending on the sweet mouth of whoever is telling the story), the Indians are back. This time they’re not competing with The Wedding Party or October 1 at the cinemas; they’re using a medium that reaches more people than the silver screen – television. We as a people have always had a palate for television dramas. The early 1990s saw the demise of several soap operas that were Nigerian – Checkmate, Cock Crow At Dawn, Mirror In The Sun and others. Instead they were replaced by Mexican telenovelas – La Mujer De Mi Vida, Catalina and Sebastian et al.

These series were acquired by independent producers from production companies anywhere in the world and simply thrown on local TV stations who often imagined that they only existed to merely sell airtime in 30 and 60-minute blocks. The emergence of Telemundo and Zee World as dedicated television channels where one could watch these shows met with delight by the audience. It is in view of the above that necessitate the need for the study as the researcher seek to investigate the popularity of Zeeworld drama series among housewives in Apapa Lagos.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The operators of the cable satellite network are smart enough to create stand-alone channels that currently get more viewership than Channels TV (that touts itself as being Nigeria’s best television station for the past nine years) does. Even between the two of them, Zee World is proving to be the preferred choice. The problem here is that we do not mind losing our identity as it is our custom, to keep up with a trend. The most widely watched TV station here is not popular because it shows mainly Nigerian content; it’s most likely that it shows Indian soaps twice a day. Since the emergence of zeeworld channel in Nigeria cable television network, most married women in Nigeria barely listen to network news let alone watch Nigeria drama series as most of them have a time schedule of different soap opera series aired on zee world cable network. It is against this backdrop that the researcher intends to investigate the popularity of Zee world drama series among housewives in Apapa Lagos

1.5 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

It has been observed in recent times that the entertainment industry in Nigeria is blossoming especially in its dominance in the contents of the programming of most television stations in Nigeria, especially the major cities (Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, etc). Therefore, this study seeks to draw the attention of media practitioners and owners (especially television) to the vital role television plays as an agent of socialization. Having this fact in mind, television media practioners and owners will be mindful of the kind of entertainment programmes they air, most especially at prime time, knowing fully the vulnerable and gullible nature of the viewers.

A research into the popularity of zeeworld drama series among housewives in Apapa Lagos whether positively or negatively appears novel, especially in television media studies. This is a contemporary issue which scholars in the field of media studies have paid little or no attention to. Therefore, part of the uniqueness of this study is that it will be of immense significance to researchers in the academia in the 21st Century. It does not only aim at contributing to knowledege but also providing a foundational basis for further studies into the socialization role of entertainment television.
