  • INTRODUCTION

Shear strength of a soil mass in the internal resistance per unit area that the soil mass can offer to resist failure and sliding along any place inside it. One must understand the nature of shearing resistance in order to analyze soil stability problems such as bearing capacity, slope stability, and lateral pressure on earth retaining structures. Base on this, the study is conducted to find out solutions to the problem of failure in soil.

It is often convenient to refer to the shearing strength of a soil as if failure consisted of one rigid block of soil sliding over another. Actually soils may undergo important movements prior to formation of a shearing surface, and for loose soils, under drained conditions, no dominant shearing surface may form. Thus, it may be better to say that we are really interested in the overall stress-strain properties of soils with formation of a distinct shearing surface just representing an end product of a previous period of loading and straining.

In this write-up, the shear strength property of a soil sample around Uyo metropolis will be checked using shear box experiment (Direct shear test).

1.1   BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The direct-shear test imposes on a soil the idealize condition that is the failure plane is force to occur a predetermined location on this plane there are two force (or stresses) acting –a normal stress due to an applied vertical load Pv and a shearing stress due to an applied vertical load Pv ­and a shearing stress due to the applied horizontal load Ph. These stresses are simply computed as

Where A is the nominal area of the specimen (or of the shear box) and is usually not corrected for change in sample area caused by the lateral displacement of the sample under the shear load Ph. These stresses should satisfy coulomb’s equation.

T      =      C + tan Ø

T      =      shear stress

n    =      normal stress

(C and Ø) = two unknown quantities.

 

1.2   STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

  • OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The objective of this study are as follows

  1. To study and investigate the shear strength of soil around uyo metropolis.
  2. To find out the shear strength properties of the soil under investigation, and
  • To familiarize the student with a procedure for rapidly determining the strength parameters (Ø and C) of a soil.

 

 

  • SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study will enable use to know the shear strength property of soil around Uyo metropolis
