ABSTRACT

Concern should be expressed about the diverse leadership philosophies coming from the rapidly expanding Pentecostal churches and how they may affect the spread of the gospel. It is well known that certain Pentecostal churches follow a democratic leadership style in which all members participate in decision-making, while other churches follow an autocratic style in which the general overseer makes all decisions, and still others follow other leadership philosophies like motivating and shepherding. In the Pentecostal community, mishandling church finances has remained a contentious problem, leading to disenchantment among congregants and, ultimately, to the growth of Pentecostal churches in Nigeria. In light of the foregoing, the study investigated the impact of leadership styles in Pentecostal churches on the spread of the gospel in Kaduna State. Data was obtained from 380 individuals (male = 195, female = 185) using a questionnaire devised by the researcher. The data gathered was used to address the research questions posed, as well as to test the hypotheses presented for the study at the.05 level of significance. The findings indicate a significant difference in male and female attitudes on leadership styles in Pentecostal congregations in Kaduna State, t = 4.840 p.05. Respondents agreed that autocratic, motivating, and visionary leadership styles are the most commonly used in Kaduna State Pentecostal churches. There was no statistically significant difference in opinions about the leadership styles utilized in handling church funds between ministers and members of Pentecostal churches, t =.841, p >.05. Respondents mainly disagreed that the general overseer handles church funds alone; rather, he is helped by the treasurer and financial secretary. The survey also discovered a statistically significant difference in the perceptions of single and married members of Pentecostal churches on the effects of leadership styles on gospel expansion, t = 6.604, p.05. It was discovered that the leadership styles of Pentecostal churches had a significant impact on the expansion of the church and the gospel. Based on the findings, it is advised that while certain general overseers handle church funds, they be aided by the financial secretary and treasurer in order to encourage probity, transparency, and accountability. External auditors should be called to assist in auditing the church accounts on a quarterly basis.

                                                        INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Every organization, both worldwide and in terms of leadership, has its own method of doing things. Nigeria, for example, has a participatory government system. A competent leader’s aims and vision serve as a model for achieving positive results. This is because any organization with bad leadership is at risk of collapse. As a result, every business need leadership to build its operating style. Based on this, Adam (2003) finds that leadership is prevalent in all aspects of life. This implies that resolving all unresolved concerns takes leadership, which has piqued the curiosity of many. Similarly, Hybels (2002) observes that leaders frequently have an impact not just because they are unusually gifted, but also because their leadership philosophies are tailored to specific ministry needs. As a result, it is critical to recognize that there are numerous leadership ideologies.

Sociocultural, political, and economic leadership are the three categories of leadership. Each of these leadership styles operates within the parameters established by the setting. The primary focus of this research is religious leadership, with a particular emphasis on Pentecostal churches in Kaduna State. Leadership in Pentecostal churches comprises a variety of critical activities, including coordination, education, counseling, disciplining, enforcing policies, employing new staff, and retiring old employees. These considerations make Pentecostal church leadership incredibly challenging. This implies that several leadership ideas are employed, such as democratic, visionary, motivational, and shepherding leadership philosophies. As a result, the study will be able to determine which of these leadership ideologies is more commonly applied in pentecostal congregations.

Furthermore, different Pentecostal churches handle their church funds in different ways. Most of the time, the general overseer, board of auditors, treasurer, and financial secretary are thought to be in charge of church finances. Based on differing perspectives, this study seeks to determine who handles church finances in Pentecostal churches and if leadership ideas have a more beneficial or destructive influence on the propagation of the gospel. Cooperation from subordinates is required for every pentecostal church to achieve its fundamental purpose, which is the propagation of the gospel. Leadership in pentecostal congregations carries a great deal of responsibility.

According to Akpami (2002), the leadership of a church is influenced by its “divine calling.” In the appropriate sense, God may choose someone to serve as a pastor, teacher, evangelist, apostle, or prophet. The study discovered that leadership positions in churches differed greatly from those in professional settings such as healthcare, education, government, and finance. Munroe (1993) defines leaders as “people who embrace or are placed in extraordinary situations that awaken their buried spiritual potential,” which includes establishing a character that inspires confidence and faith in their followers or fellow believers. According to Nmadu (2010), leadership poses both positive and negative problems depending on how it operates. Given that this study is explanatory and that the leadership of the pentecostal churches has severe challenges, it is worth noting. Given the aforementioned, the goal of this study was to look into how Pentecostal church leadership styles effect gospel distribution in Kaduna State.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Concerns should be raised regarding the many leadership philosophies emerging from the ever-expanding pentecostal churches and how they may affect the propagation of the gospel. According to Eckman (2010), Jesus Christ was the originator of noble leadership. He went on to remark that this was due to his spiritual leadership and his sacrifice on the cross. Different leadership ideologies are uncommon in Pentecostal churches. Several Pentecostal congregations are well renowned for having democratic leadership styles in which all members participate in decision-making. While some utilize other leadership styles, such as shepherding and motivating leadership, a substantial majority of them use autocratic leadership, in which decisions are decided solely by the general supervisor. However, according to Mamman (2007), who was mentioned in Mark 10:43, servanthood—which possesses Jesus Christ’s life—is a critical component of leadership in the New Testament. Another major feature of pentecostal churches is the administration of church funds. In most cases, the general overseers work with the church treasurers, board of auditors, and central working committees to manage significant amounts of church funds. Most of the time, this condition has resulted in unhappiness among churchgoers, who create their own pentecostal churches in order to handle church funds completely. As a result, in the place of actual salvation, the principal lectures are those about giving, planting seeds, paying tithes, and making offerings. Another concern is the pace at which members of pentecostal congregations enroll in discipleship programs. In light of this, this study examined the impact of pentecostal church leadership styles on the spread of the gospel. Whether leadership ideologies have a larger positive or negative impact on gospel dissemination.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The general objective of this study is to examine the impact of leadership styles in the Pentecostal churches on the growth of the gospel in Kaduna State. Based on this, the specific objectives of this study were to:

1. Identify the opinions of male and female members of Pentecostal churches on the leadership styles in the Pentecostal churches in Kaduna State.
2. Compare the opinions of ministers and members of Pentecostal churches on the leadership styles used in handling church funds.
3. Examine the opinions of single and married members of Pentecostal churches on the impact of leadership styles on the growth of the gospel in Kaduna State.

1.4 Research Questions

This study aimed at finding answers to the following research questions:

1. What are the opinions of male and female members of Pentecostal churches in respect of leadership styles in the Pentecostal churches in Kaduna State?
2. What are the opinions of ministers and members of Pentecostal churches as regards the leadership styles used in handling of church funds?
3. What are the opinions of single and married members of Pentecostal churches on the impact of leadership styles on the growth of the gospel in Kaduna State?

1.5 Null Hypotheses

HO1: There is no significant difference in the opinions of male and female members of Pentecostal churches on the impact of leadership styles on the Pentecostal churches in Kaduna State.

HO2: There is no significant difference in the opinions of ministers and members of Pentecostal churches as regards the leadership styles used in handling church funds.

HO3: There is no significant difference between the opinions of married and single members of Pentecostal churches as regards the impact of leadership styles on the growth of the gospel in Kaduna State.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The study is notable for the following reasons. The study’s conclusions are meant to shape pastors’, churchgoers’, and other leaders’ ideas on leadership by taking their leadership model from the Bible. The research should raise awareness and discourage churchgoers from engaging in power battles, avarice, and treachery. It will also assist modern Christians in understanding that the church is a place of worship for Yahweh rather than a place of profit. Furthermore, the study will serve as a foundation for future academic and scholar research. The study will identify and address concerns with Pentecostal church leaders’ leadership beliefs.
