Among the numerous questions running through people’s mind on the official launching of an online information site tagged newsinpidgin.ng is “why news in Pidgin English”? This article intend to narrow down the objectives of the site and address the question in quote. In the past, frequent application of Nigerian Pidgin English during conversation was shifted to non-educated people and perceived by intellects with negative attitude.
In developing countries like Nigeria, Pidgin English dominates a great part of her region and it relevance can’t be overemphasized even in the context of this article. Pidgin English has gained ground and is becoming more common day after day, with this new development one can ascertain that Pidgin English has come to stay in Nigeria. Gone are the days where the use of Pidgin English were looked down upon by lecturers, teachers and scholars in the regions.
In Nigerian universities, the use of Pidgin English has spread like a wild-fire even among educated fellows and perceived more by Nigerians than English. Indeed, using Nigerian Pidgin English is increasingly popular among young people, lecturers, many writers, politicians, street vendors and musicians. Nigerian music tends to sell more and capture people’s mind when done in Nigerian Pidgin English.
According to the (Department of Second Language Studies University of Hawai‘i Mānoa 2009, 2010) Pidgin Hawaiian was the first pidgin to develop on plantations in the 19thcentury, for Hawaiian was the main language of interethnic communication in schools and society until 1875, when the Reciprocity Treaty with the United States was signed. The resulting free trade conditions allowed for a great number of Americans to do business on the islands. From 1878-1888, many English-medium schools were built, and as more laborer’s children attended these schools year after year, the language of plantations was more influenced by English, and the pidgin shifted from Pidgin Hawaiian to Pidgin English.
Pidgin English emanated in Nigeria during the trade contact between the British and local people in the seventeenth century. It is part of a continuum of English Pidgins and Creoles spoken other West-African countries such as Cameroon, Sierra Leone and Ghana. In recent years, Nigerian Pidgin English development has been particularly evident in the big cities and ports in the south of Nigeria, where it is used among people belonging to different ethnic groups; the use of Nigerian Pidgin English is strictly linked to the urbanization process. After that era, the language stayed on as a means of communication amongst the people because of the many different African languages; For instance, in Nigeria there are approximately five hundred different languages. Like most languages, Nigerian Pidgin English has really evolved with new words been added on regular interval.
It’s a popular saying that “when the purpose of a thing is not known, abuse is inevitable”, so I deemed it fit to outline few objectives of newsinpidgin.ng. Although no official status has been granted to Nigerian Pidgin English in Nigeria yet, and this article doesn’t intend fighting for such right. But if the purpose of communication must be achieved then it’s time we embrace Pidgin English heartily to our culture without prejudice. Technology has brought about information to our society today, where everyone has access to acquire information and also participate in information creation about happenings, events, or occurrence, on his/her environment, yet there is still a little problem we have failed to consider.
“Upon all the golden celebration of high and free flow of information, we have failed to ask ourselves, how many people have received and relate with such information effectively and efficiently”. If only the educated elites, receive the information or news of the day; what then will happen to those who can’t understand a well-structured grammatical statements and sentences, because of dictions, and words with high meanings?
In all this, the true meaning of a message is the only thing we need in communication, information, sharing of ideas and thoughts.
This led to the creation of newsinpidgin.ng being to showcase the niche that we have come to create “balance” of knowledge to all Nigerians via “news-in-pidgin” solution.
For instance, one of our recent news read thus;
“THE DISCREPANCY BETWEEN THE PDP GOVERNMENT AND APC GOVERNMENT”
Translation via news in pidging read thus;
“D DIFFERENCE WEY DEY BETWEEN PDP AND APC GOVERNMENT”.
“AS PRESIDENT BUHARI RETURED FROM MEDICAL VACATION FROM LONDON, SOURCE HAS GATHERED THAT HE WILL BE WORKING FROM HOME”.
Translation via news in pidging read thus;
“AS NAIJA PRESIDENT BUHARI DON COME BACK FROM LONDON, PUNCH DON GATHER SAY HIM GO DEY WORK FROM HIM HOUSE”.
Newsinpigin.ng intend using core Nigerian Pidgin English in reporting her news, so it will be easy for everyone to relate with her and understand with a strong feeling of belonging. When news in pidgin is widely embraced and accepted by all including clergy men and political representatives “It is certain that Nigerians will not be encountering information imperialism again”. For instance my first journey to the extreme north as a Corp member in a strange land was made easy through the use of Nigerian Pidgin English, communicating with street vendors, market women and okada men, commonly known as “kabo-kabo” in Sokoto State, posted a sense of relieve and confidence via Nigerian Pidgin English.
In conclusion, “if it’s true that abuse is inevitable when the purpose of a thing is not known, and the purpose for language be it native, foreign, local or pidgin is to ease communication, then avoiding or conditioning communication to a particular language is abusing the real essence of communication”. Gone are the days when business men, civil servants, sports lovers and lovers of entertainment queued along the road with newspaper vendors to read headline as some couldn’t afford the expense of a daily newspaper. Today, technology through social medias like Linda Ikege blog, Linkeage, Twitter, Facebook, newsinpidgin.ng etc has brought news/information to our door post at a cheaper rate and easy access via smart phones, iPad, tablets etc. “Information rules the world, and not being informed is to be deformed”.
