Introduction

The assessment sought to examine conflict in marriages and its resolution in the Nigerian context. Generally, conflict has been described as a product of interaction between or among people. Among the biggest puzzles facing marriages in Nigeria is the rise of divorce and their impact on the couples. A number of homes in Nigeria have been enmeshed in escalated conflicts that most of the time has left either of the spouse or both wounded. More so the rate of marital conflict and its attendant challenges has become alarming. Many marriages have ended in divorce living some children to wander about on the street. Marital conflict is a common occurrence among couples. It cuts across upper, middle and lower class. Quite a number of families have been thrown apart as a result of spousal conflicts. Spousal conflict no matter the cause is a source of stress not only partners but also to the children. If conflicts go unresolved it could bring about total dissolution of the union. The social media is flood with cases of partners beating themselves to the extent of it resulting to lethal outcomes (Bammeke and Eshiet, 2018).

Conflict is an integral part of an ongoing relationship and it is inevitable in every family (Obelenienė and Gabševičienė, 2015; Dillon et al, 2015). Marital conflicts can be defined as the state of tension or stress between marital partners as the couple try to carry out their marital roles. The fact is that conflict can either be productive or destructive. It is productive when it shapes and sharpens relationship. Traditionally conflict is believed to be bad and should be avoided but it is foolhardy to think of a world without conflict because no two persons are the same. Conflict is therefore something that should be expected. Many factors have combined to affect marriage institutions thus causing many problems which both young and old married couples must contend with. The fact that two people agree or plan to live together as husband and wife calls for different expectations and hopes, some of which might be fulfilled while others remain unfulfilled. Since couples are humans and no gods, it is only natural to expect that there will be differences in opinions, values, needs, desires and habits that are the stuff of everyday living. Human relationship is devoid of conflict and misunderstanding once in a while, many families with in our societies experience difficulties as a result of marital conflicts. This constitutes a major threat to sustainability of marital peace and stability in our societies both small and large.

Conflict occurs in all human societies but, it occurs in various degrees, marital conflict is that situation between man and woman. This is where husband and wife have different opinion about issues, events or activities which cannot be mutually resolved. Marital conflict usually arises mostly due to lack of understanding between the man and the woman. This comes in different ways such as difference in education and social backgrounds, physical maintenance, love making, extra marital affairs. As people become more educated and society becomes more enlightened, one expects the frequency of marital conflicts to reduce but ironically, the reverse has been the case. In Nigeria today, the rate at which marital couples experience divorce and re-marriage is quite alarming (Dada and Idowu, 2006). Many families have been and some are still seriously at war with themselves simply because of their failure to arrest, manage or resolve conflicting issues between couples or families. This term paper is intended to explore the causes of marital conflict, the resolution strategy adopted by couples to mitigate the challenges.
