ABSTRACT
This study was carried out to investigate the Carnival Calabar and the promotion of indigenous culture in Cross River State: the effects on Christians and church growth. Calabar Carnival festival in Nigeria, also known as “Africa’s Biggest Street Party”, was created as part of the vision of making the Cross River State, Nigeria, the number one tourist destination for Nigerians and tourists all over the world. The study investigates History of Calabar and Efik, the religious lives of the Efik people and the Efik culture as well as the social lives of the Efiks. The study further examined the effects of Calabar Carnival on the Christians and Church Growth in Cross River State. The study concluded with some recommendations that the government should ensure that all machinery is put in place to curb the negative culture that is being showcased by the foreigners and the alternative routes should be provided by the government to ease the difficulties encountered by Sunday Church services as well as carnival attendance to the place of events.
