CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

  • BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Like everything else, students and resources management in every institution has to change with the times and technological trends. It is essential to provide professional advice and support for the school transportation management system, which is in line with an up-to-date technological strategy. This allows for a close adherence to the business strategy and institutional goals, which leads to a new quality in transportation management operations. Comparatively, it is a major challenge for the transport department of every tertiary institution resource e-based organization to provide services that are tailored to end-to-end processes, which actively involve students, management and overall leadership of the university.

Students whose hometowns are far from the universities are typically accommodated by the universities. There are beds, study desks, and closets in every room. Students don’t have to bother about transportation when they attend class. Maintaining residence on campus also entails abiding by all guidelines provided by the colleges (such as a curfew). 

Some students would prefer to rent a room or stay in an off-campus hostel since it offers them a higher level of comfort, privacy, and freedom while avoiding having to adhere to the norms and restrictions of the university’s residence halls.

Due to the rise in students enrolling, some universities simply do not have adequate space. Students may rent apartments or look into private off-campus hostels that are close to the university if there is not enough space on the university campus, which results in the studentification” of the neighborhood. Studentification is the process that results from a residential concentration of college students and goes along with three-dimensional structural changes that have an impact on the geographical cluster of higher education institutions on the social, economic, cultural, and physical levels (Smith & Den holm, 2006).

  • PROBLEM STATEMENT

The challenges faced by the management of the off-campus hostels is identifying the number of students having lecture at the university at a certain time is quite difficult. The manual method of sorting out the time for grouping students to transport the students to the university as well as back to the hostel is time consuming and tedious. It involves examining, grouping students of different levels and departments by the management at the beginning of each new session.

To stem out the problem a transport cluster software needs to be developed that will generate a list of students with similar lecture time at the university to reduce number of trips to the university and back to the hostel.

With this mind each student is required to provide their starting and ending time of lectures for the entire session which will be inputted into the system. The system will then gather and cluster the student that have lecture at certain time periods. This will in turn generate a list that shows which student leaves to and back from school at a particular time.

1.3 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

With due consideration of the task ahead and the stipulated aims and objectives of this project work, it is expedient to embark on the project, as the proposed system will enable transport managements engage in prompt decision making as the proposed system will generate prompt and accurate students’ lecture schedule reports.

Below are the under listed benefits to be derived from the new electronic Transport Cluster System:

  1. The system will enable the electronic registration and verification of students.
  2. The system will store and retrieved these records electronically, this eliminating all the problems associated with the manual system. e.g. stress, slow in operating, inaccuracy etc.
  3. The system will electronically perform clustering of students based on criteria and parameters.
  4. The system will enable the generation of corresponding report that will be used for transport evaluation exercises.
  5. Lastly, the system will enhance and improve transport staff performance as promptness will be greatly encouraged.

1.4 AIM AND OBJECTIVES

Aim

The aim of this work project is to design, develop and deploy a Transport Cluster System for Students Living Off-Campus Hostels.

  1. Facilitating Community: The system aims to create a sense of community among off-campus students by forming clusters based on their class schedules and locations. This helps students connect with peers, build relationships, and support each other throughout their academic journey.
  1. Improving Transportation Efficiency: By clustering students with similar schedules, the system aims to optimize transportation arrangements. This can help reduce travel time, increase convenience, and minimize the environmental impact of commuting.
  1. Enhancing Communication: The system aims to improve communication between students within each cluster. It may provide channels for students to connect, share information, and coordinate activities. This fosters collaboration, enables quick dissemination of important updates, and enhances overall engagement.

1.5 SCOPES AND LIMITATIONS

SCOPES

  1. Geographical Scope: This study will be carried out between Nile University and Benchmark Student Accommodation in Abuja. Nile University and Benchmark Student Accommodation is estimated to be five point eight kilometers (5.8kms) apart using Ring Road two (2) which is about a fifteen (15) minutes’ drive.
  2. Time Scope: The study span will be about six (6) months i.e. from October 2019 to April 2020.
  3. Content Scope: This project is mainly focused on the development of a software for a Cluster Transport for Students Living in Off-Campus Hostels and their components including students and their lecture starting and ending times.
  4. The software will capture student names, level, department and their starting and ending times of lectures for entire session. It will then generate a list of students going to school and back to the hostel at a particular period of time that reduce the number of trips to the university and back to the hostel.

LIMITATIONS

Time Constraint: The study will simultaneously be done with other academic work. This consequently will cut down the time devoted for the project work.

1.6 DEFINITION OF KEY TERMS

  1. Administrator: Somebody or a group of individual/business whose job is to manage the affairs of a system, business, organization or institution.
  2. Analysis: Is the detailed examination of some given data that is used to explain or elucidate on problems.
  3. Cluster: A grouping of a number of similar things.
  4. Cluster analysis: Is a statistical classification technique in which a set of objects or points with similar characteristics are grouped together in clusters.
  5. Database report: A database report is the formatted result of database queries and contains useful data for decision-making and analysis.
  6. Data cluster: Clustering a particular set of objects based on their characteristics, aggregating them according to their similarities.
  7. Thematic analysis: Is a process of analysis that emphasizes identification and interpretation of patterns meaning within qualitative data.
  8. Report generation: Is the act of taking data from a source such as database, XML stream or spreadsheet, and use it to produce a document in a format which satisfies a particular human readership for prompt decision making.
  9. Transportation: Transportation in this context is the act of moving students to and fro of the university.
  10. Records: A record is composing of fields and contains all the needed data about a particular student in a database.
  11. Schedule: Is the act of giving list of intended events and times.
  12. Semester: A semester is half-year in a school or university, especially in the Nigerian universities like Nile University of Nigeria
  13. Software: A software is a set of instructions, data or programs used to carry out a specific task in a computer.
  14. Sorting: In computer science, sorting is arranging data in a particular order; either ascending or descending order.
  15. Studentification: Studentification refers to the process of social, environmental economic change affected by large numbers of students invading particular areas of the cities or towns in which popular universities are located.
  16. System: A system is a set of components working together to accomplish a common goal.
