Abstract

This study was on knowledge and perception towards covid19 transmission and prevention among nurses in specialist hospital Gombe state. The total population for the study is 641 staffs of specialist hospital Gombe state. The researcher used questionnaires as the instrument for the data collection. Descriptive Survey research design was adopted for this study. A total of 427 respondents made doctors, nurses, directors and lab scientist were used for the study. The data collected were presented in tables and analyzed using simple percentages and frequencies

INTRODUCTION

1.1Background to the Study

Coronavirus disease 2019, known as COVID-19 is an extremely expanding pandemic caused by a novel human coronavirus; severe acute respiratory syndrome-corona virus (SARS-COV-2), an enveloped single-stranded RNA virus, previously known as 2019-nCov. It was first announced in December 2019, among patients with viral pneumonia in Wuhan city, China to become the most important health problem worldwide

There were two previous outbreaks of coronaviruses; SARS-CoV and Middle East respiratory syndrome-corona virus (MERS-CoV) in 2003 and 2012, which resemble the novel coronavirus. Due to the rapid spread of this highly transmitted virus to many countries, WHO declared it as a “public health emergency of international concern” on January 30, 2020. Later, due to the continual rise in the number of affected countries, cases, and fatalities, WHO declared COVID-19 as a global pandemic on 11 March 2020. SARS-COV-2 is transmitted from person-to-person by close contact (within about 6 feet) via the respiratory secretions in coughs or sneezes or by touching virus-contaminated surfaces or objects. Old age and pre-existence of chronic illnesses have been identified as potential risk factors for severe disease and mortality. The virus incubation period is 2–14 days with the majority of patients (80%) have mild symptoms that do not require medical intervention. About 20% of COVID-19 cases had serious illness as dyspnea, sepsis, septic shock, and organ failure, and can be fatal in about 2% of cases. There is no antiviral curative treatment or vaccine that has been recommended for COVID-19. The WHO recommends prevention of spread by protecting health care workers (HCWs) and patient’s close contacts. Primary preventive measures include regular hand washing, social distancing, and respiratory hygiene (covering mouth and nose while coughing or sneezing). The nurses are at the frontline of COVID- 19 pandemic defense and are exposed to, not only infection with COVID-19 due to their frequent exposure to infected individuals, but also psychological distress, long working hours, fatigue, occupational stigma and physical violence. The transmission of the disease among nurses is exaggerated by overcrowding, absence of isolation facilities, contaminated environment and is likely enhanced by insufficient knowledge and awareness of infection control practices among nurses. That inadequate knowledge and the incorrect attitudes among nurses can directly influence practices and lead to delayed diagnosis, poor infection control practice, and spread of disease. Based on this background the researcher wants to investigate the knowledge and perception towards covid 19 transmission and prevention among nurses in specialist hospital Gombe.

1.2 Statement of the problem

Understanding nurses’ knowledge, attitudes, and possible perception of risk of infection helps to predict the outcomes of COVID-19 in Gombe specialist hospital. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the knowledge, and perception towards covid 19 transmission and prevention among nurses in specialist hospital in Gombe state

1.3 Objective of the study

The objectives of the study are;

  1. To find out the knowledge and perception of nurses in specialist hospital Gombe state toward covid19
  2. To find out the mode of prevention by nurses of specialist hospital Gombe state to avoid contraction of covid19
  3. To find out whether all nurses at specialist hospital Gombe state adhere to preventive measures to avoid contraction

1.4 Research hypotheses

For the successful completion of the study, the following research hypotheses were formulated by the researcher;

H0: there is no knowledge and perception of nurses in specialist hospital Gombe state toward covid19

H1: there is knowledge and perception of nurses in specialist hospital Gombe state toward covid19

H02: Not all nurses at specialist hospital, Gombe state adhere to preventive measures to avoid contraction

H2: all nurses at specialist hospital, Gombe state adhere to preventive measures to avoid contraction

1.5 Significance of the study

The study will be very significant to students, nurses, ministry of health and the general public. the study will give a clear insight on the knowledge and perception towards covid 19 transmission and prevention among nurses in specialist hospital Gombe. The result of the study will serve as a reference to other researchers that will embark on the related  topic

1.6 Scope and the limitation of the study

The scope of the study covers knowledge and perception towards covid 19 transmission and prevention among nurses in specialist hospital Gombe.

The researcher encounters some constrain which limited the scope of the study;

 a) AVAILABILITY OF RESEARCH MATERIAL: The research material available to the researcher is insufficient, thereby limiting the study

b) TIME: The time frame allocated to the study does not enhance wider coverage as the researcher has to combine other academic activities and examinations with the study.

1.7 DEFINITION OF TERMS

 Perception: the ability to see, hear, or become aware of something through the senses.

Knowledge: facts, information, and skills acquired through experience or education; the theoretical or practical understanding of a subject.

Transmission: the action or process of transmitting something, or the state of being transmitted.

Prevention: Preventive healthcare, or prophylaxis, consists of measures taken for disease prevention. Disease and disability are affected by environmental factors, genetic predisposition, disease agents, and lifestyle choices and are dynamic processes which begin before individuals realize they are affected.
