INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Sex education is a broad term that encompasses the study of human sexual anatomy, reproduction, sexual intercourse, and other aspects of human sexual behavior. Sex education, according to Anibueze (2001), is a study that assists a person in developing a positive and healthy attitude toward sex, allowing him or her to live a complete life, enjoy life fully, and develop as a responsible member of the community to which he or she belongs. Sex education, like other forms of education, aims to prepare young people for a better society. As a result, sex education is a concept that enables a person to learn about sexuality while also developing a positive attitude toward sex. According to Kearney (2008), sex education necessitates a comparable course of action on the part of the school. calibrated to instill in children and adults the socially acceptable attitudes, practices, and personal behavior that would best protect the individual as a human being and the family as a social institution. According to Nwafor (2006), the primary goals of sex education are to promote sexual health by providing learners with the opportunity to develop a positive and accurate view of sex, as well as the information and skills they need to care for their health. Despite the fact that sex education has a significant positive impact on men, it is not part of the Junior Secondary School curriculum in Ebonyi State. For young people in the region, the threat of sexual difficulties, such as ignorance, misbehavior, immorality, and infections, is always present (Sophia, 2005). As a result, it is now more important than ever for educators to pay attention to all phases of education by updating and improving sex education school curricula (Jenny, 2004). Sex education is required to prepare the next generation for the challenges that lie ahead. Even if society recognizes the importance of sex education, parents may object to it being included in the Junior Secondary School curriculum. It is important to note that socialization occurs in the school setting among students of various ethnicities and backgrounds. Sex education can take place in a variety of settings, both inside and outside of the classroom. The school plays an important role in preparing teenagers to face the challenge of becoming adults by raising awareness. Future responsible men and women (Helen, 2006). According to Kehily (2002), in this diverse environment, various people have the potential and obligation to provide sex education for young people. As a result, parents’ attitudes can have an impact on their children’s lives; for example, even if they are aware of their children’s sex-related interests, some parents may purposefully refuse them appropriate answers or completely avoid them. The term perception refers to attitudes or habits that should be changed. Denga (2002) defines perception as the act of becoming aware of an object’s attributes or relationships through the use of sense organs. View, according to Haggai (2000), is the process by which we arrange and comprehend the pattern of inputs in our environment. Perception is the process by which an individual uses his sense organs to convert disparate stimuli in his environment into knowledge of things and meanings. Personal, current, sensory, and previous experiences are organized into a pattern of awareness that demonstrates the quality and interrelationship of objects and meanings to form a pattern of consciousness (Denga, 2002). The attitude of a person determines his entire perspective of a situation. The attitude of a person determines whether he or she reacts favorably, indifferently, or negatively to a specific event (Mallum, 2000) Parental perceptions of sex education refer to how parents perceive and respond to the importance of sex education in junior secondary schools. An investigation into parents’ attitudes toward sex education It is necessary to conduct this research in junior secondary schools in the Ebonyi urban area because it will reveal their level of awareness and the importance they place on this aspect of education. This will either result in acceptance or resistance, necessitating the support of school administrators in redefining how sex education is introduced in Junior Secondary Schools. According to Izugbara, children in Nigeria grow up sexually absurd, with distorted views of sex (2001). Denial of sex education, which aims to provide accurate factual information and understanding of sex-related issues, may cause problems for adolescents and society as a whole. Furthermore, children are unable to discern the direction of social development and are perpetually entangled in a web of uncertainty (Malli, 2007). Our educational system, which is in charge of
Because sex education is not taught as a subject in school, it is difficult to teach our children about the changes that occur in their bodies and why they occur. It is unknown what has slowed its implementation. It is impossible to begin identifying tactics to promote sex education among Junior Secondary schools in Ebonyi urban region of Ebonyi State without first understanding the root cause of its absence. In this context, the researcher decided to look into parents’ attitudes toward sex education in junior secondary schools in Ebonyi, Ebonyi state.
1.2 DEFINITION OF THE PROBLEM
Man’s sexuality is an important aspect of his life that can bring him a lot of joy or a lot of pain. Suffering varies according to how it is managed. It is clear that young people in Ebonyi, particularly teenagers, are constantly threatened by sex-related issues such as illnesses, misbehavior, ignorance, and immorality (Kehily, 2002). The educational system’s failure to include sex education in the Junior Secondary curriculum, particularly in Ebonyi metropolis, has resulted in a delay in the acquisition of necessary information and a knowledge gap in sexuality issues for teenagers. It’s no surprise that young people in Ebonyi are attempting to fill this void through methods that aren’t always adequate or reliable; the result is an increase in sexual danger, with a high prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases, particularly HIV/AIDS, which has become a global pandemic with no known cure. Among the adolescents in the
There is a lot of disobedience and social misfits in the region (Micheal, 2007). Adolescents in the region are prone to early marriages, abortions, unplanned pregnancies, school dropouts, and extreme indiscipline. This has posed a problem in Ebonyi State, particularly in the Ebonyi urban region; the state risks losing its working population as well as future generations of this wonderful nation. The fact that sex education has yet to be implemented in Junior Secondary Schools in Ebonyi City, Ebonyi State, indicates that there are some problems. As a result, the researcher wishes to investigate parents’ attitudes toward sex education in Junior Secondary Schools in Ebonyi City, Ebonyi State.

1.5 THE STUDY’S SIGNIFICANCE
The goal of this study is to discover how parents perceive sex education in junior secondary schools in Ebonyi City, Ebonyi State. As a result, children, parents, education policymakers, the federal government of Nigeria, guidance and counsellors, and the general public all value it. The findings of this study should help students understand sex education issues. The study may also encourage students to develop responsible sexual behavior, thereby avoiding early marriages, premarital sex, unwanted pregnancies, increased abortions, the spread of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), school dropouts, and other social services identified in our study. society. The findings of this investigation may, in theory, reveal the parents’ level of perception. If the results are positive or negative, they may be able to chart a new course in addressing their children’s sexual concerns and challenges, which has a significant impact on them. Parents can spread the word about the proposed intervention program through church campaigns and town hall meetings. The study’s findings are expected to provide more clarity and direction to education policymakers, allowing them to enact a policy on the inclusion of sex education as a course of study in the curriculum of Junior Secondary schools and encourage its rapid implementation in Junior Secondary schools. The findings of this study may be useful to counsellors and guidance counselors. A much-needed sex education program is planned and implemented by counselors. Counselor education programs could also be restructured and expanded to include areas of counseling intervention such as student sexuality counseling. The findings of this study will assist school officials in raising awareness about sex education and the dangers of carelessness. Seminars, workshops, conferences, and public awareness campaigns are all possibilities. Because adolescents are tomorrow’s leaders and cannot continue to be uneducated about sexual affairs, school administrators will use well-planned and coordinated dissemination of reliable information through the mainstream media to develop more favorable attitudes toward sex education concerns. The findings of this study may aid the federal government in increasing government funding for sexuality education and counseling in junior secondary schools. To
To accomplish this, government education organizations will work with professional counselors. Finally, the findings of this study may provide empirical education for educational advancement in this field. This is due to the possibility that the findings will provide empirical information on parents’ perceptions of sex education in junior secondary schools.
