INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
The pursuit of material wealth has made pastors abandoned kingdom ministry which is focused on saving the lost souls in pursuit of enriching their stomach ministry. Many of the popular and unpopular churches today do not portray the characteristics of genuine compassion modeled by Jesus, but they are motivated by selfish interest of filling their hungry stomach. In Nigeria today, there is a high rate of stomach ministries, prayer house and fellowship, which are established on the basis of personal interest and selfish purposes. The twenty-first century has been marked by a global shift away from the basic truth from kingdom ministry. Stomach ministries came into the Nigerian Christendom with the rise and increase in the number of churches and it has become so common and extremely alarming till date (Essien, 2010). Most ministries in Nigeria has been criticized for their dramatic, constant but sustained deviation from its original tenet, status of sacredness and holiness.
The increasing number of Pentecostal churches, which seems uncontrollable, is substantiated in the heavy presence of its churches in every nook and cranny of the Nigerian society. Today, the rate at which churches are springing up in Nigeria is alarming, almost every street in country has at least two churches not to mention the rooms and parlous which are converted to churches. Churches are now seen as a lucrative business ventures, to the extent that most Bible College students see it as a license to plant or open a church after completion of the college without considering the necessity of God’s calling (Ibiyinka, 2011).
Stomach ministry is are ministries founded on falsehood with a primary mission of wealth creation in place of saving souls for Christ. While Kingdom ministry is a spiritual ministry founded on the living word of God; which is that of God the father, Son and the Holy Spirit, in accordance to biblical theology and guide. Spreading the true word of God to all people is a command by Jesus Christ in (Mt 28:19, Mk 16:15). According to (Ekpendu, 2016), in the early church the task of teaching (disdasko) required that the truth and the duties of the gospel be more deliberately unfolded and applied. Its intent was to apply Christ’s will to the daily life of the community as a word of instruction, of encouragement, and of consolation, to ‘live in Him’ (Col. 2:6; 3:16, Tm 1 6:2, 1st Cor 14: 3; 26).
Almost every major street within the urban areas of Nigeria today plays host to a church. Millions of Nigerians, pledge allegiance to one Christian denomination or another, just as much as Church auditoriums and Crusades are thronged with millions of worshipers all across the nation. Yet immoral practices remains rampant. It is believed that if Churches are on the increase, its positive impact in the lives of the people should be greater than when there were few Churches. According to Jemiriye (1998), many of the ministries (churches) seem to have abandoned the precepts on which the church and other religious practices are founded; but now brazenly pursue economic or commercial-oriented interests and tendencies. They way and manner some of the old and new breed ministries, and other autonomous religious cum Para-religious groups conduct the business of the church indicates a string of profanities. They exhibit a strong appetite for ‘love of money’ and materialism-which is ‘the root of all evils. Truth is sacrificed while lies, deceit are now potent weapons used by the founders and leaders of the churches and other autonomous Christian religious groups for manipulating their followers (Achor, 1999).
Fake pastors has used the gospel of giving and tithing to rob thousands of their followers of their hard-earned resources. The messages of healing, miracles and prosperity have often received wider acceptance among the populace, especially the youth. Many Nigerians have seen the hope of the oil boom collapse into the spiral of economic decline, social and political decadence. Pentecostal churches in the country have continued to feast on the psychology of the masses that genuinely are desirous of relief or a means of escape from their sordid existential realities. True, while there may be some faithful Pentecostal pastors who are committed to the course of promoting God’s kingdom on earth, several others have continued to pursue their pre-occupation as a commercial venture, and utilize any means to accumulate profits (Reuben, 2001). This study will attempt to investigate the disparities between stomach ministry and kingdom ministry.
1.2 Statement of the Problem The church were once ministering to the spiritual, educational and even economic needs of its followers, but today it is expected by many of these new generation churches that the worshipers, even the poverty-stricken ones provide copiously for the church. Offering and giving which was voluntary in the past is now made compulsory with some pastors, who pronounce curses on their followers who refuses to be committed in tithing which is hardly used to God’s glory. Pastors now prefer to acquire all the luxuries of life rather than teach the true word of God. They have devise several means to suck the pockets of their helpless followers dry through different guises of false prophesies in the name of God. Most churches advertise tithing as a condition for enjoying materials blessings from God and to support their claims, they cite Malachi 3:8-10. This part of the scripture is often misinterpreted to collect money from unsuspecting members who so much believe in them and quickly open their purses to give. But rather than use this tithe money to the growth of the church, these pastors use it to sponsor themselves to expensive and exotic holidays and buying properties, wonders-on-wheels and mansions. Pastors have also perfected several means of generating income from their faithful followers aside from tithes and sowing seeds. Therefore, the present study on stomach versus kingdom ministry: the fluctuate of 21st century gospel is expected to address the above issues of immoralities in churches.
