Soil is the essential ingredient in any farming enterprise. When it is in poor health, plants cannot grow to their full potential. The environmental impact of automobile waste dump assessment on soil in coal camp Enugu metropolis, Enugu state were examined using four soil samples, three were obtained from automobile repair shops and one from non automobile repair shop to serve as a control. Physiochemical analysis of the samples were carried out to defect the Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Dissolved oxygen (Do), Biochemical oxygen Demand (BOD), Total Nitrogen and Nitrate contents of the soil.
Results should, the COD for the samples were 16 and 78, 370 and 434,442 and 474,488 and 522 respectively. The DO for the samples was O and 4.50, 1.96 and 5.88, 1.8 and 5.2, 0 and 5.8 respectively. The BOD for the samples were 16 and 82.5, 371.96 and 439.88, 443.8 and 479.2,488 and 527.8 respectively. The total Nitrogen and Nitrate for the samples were 1.1 and 0.073, 1.2 and 0.0728, 2.3 and 0.060, 1.9 and 0.082 respectively.
From the result it was shown that the values of chemical oxygen Demand (C.O.D), Dissolved oxygen (DO), Biochemical oxygen Demand (BOD) in control sample D, Non automobile repair shop were higher than the values obtained in the other three samples. These differences in values suggest. Soil contamination in soils in automobile repair shops and this soil contamination by automobile waste does not support the life of organisms in the soil.
