The Current National Anthem of Nigeria
The previous National Anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee,” was composed by Frances Berda and penned by British expatriate Lillian Jean Williams. The anthem was criticized over time for its non-Nigerian composer, despite its early significance in forming national identity.
President Bola Tinubu recently signed the National Anthem Bill 2024 into law, bringing back Nigeria’s original anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee,” in a legislative move.
Godswill Akpabio, the president of the Senate, announced this development at a combined National Assembly session. Restoring the old hymn, which was Nigeria’s national song from 1960 until its independence in 1978, brings the nation back to the early years following its freedom.
Lawmakers overwhelmingly supported the recent legislative reform, which was led by Senator Opeyemi Bamidele of Ekiti Central. In contrast to its replacement, “Arise, O Compatriots,” supporters of the measure contended that the original song promotes a greater symbol of unity, peace, and prosperity.
The lawmakers emphasized that the national principles, ethics, and conventions embodied in the independence anthem were not reflected in the present anthem, which was a creation of the military administration. “Nigeria, we hail thee, our dear native land,” goes the old anthem. However, what are the remaining lyrics of the antiquated national anthem?
Below is the new adopted National Anthem:
Nigeria we hail thee,
Our own dear native land,
Though tribe and tongue may differ,
In brotherhood, we stand,
Nigerians all, and proud to serve
Our sovereign Motherland.
Our flag shall be a symbol
That truth and justice reign,
In peace or battle honour’d,
And this we count as gain,
To hand on to our children
A banner without stain.
O God of all creation,
Grant this our one request,
Help us to build a nation
Where no man is oppressed,
And so with peace and plenty
Nigeria may be blessed.
