Abstract
This work investigated the voting behavior of social science students of Benue States university, Makurdi. The quantitative method using descriptive survey design was employed as the method for gathering data while the questionnaire was the tool for collecting data and the simple percentage was the statistical tool for analyzing the collated data. Findings showed that; money, religious and ethnic sentiments played decisive roles in the voting behavior of social science students of Benue state university. It is therefore recommended that, there is need for a re-orientation of students on the need for free, fair and transparent campus elections as well as the need for strict disciplinary measures against threats of violence during campus elections.
CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION
Background to the Study
Government is said to be legal or lawful when its powers are derived from people (the electorates). This pre-supposes that a measure or degree of participation is crucial in choosing political leaders at all levels of government, both in the civil society and in institutions of higher learning (being the microcosm of the largersociety). Democracy provides a political mechanism which makes for the involvement of the people in the making of decisions that determine their collective fate (Google retrieved/may/2019).
The major way through which individuals determine their political and general welfare is by exercise of their voting rights (franchise) during elections. Every organized group has a way of recruiting its leaders into its various political positions.This invariably means that every organized group or society involves an element of politics. According to Ball (1976), politics is relevant to every other sphere of human endeavor or activity and can occur anywhere: in the family, church, mosque or school etc. In this way, every group that sometimes engage in conflict resolution and especially in the recruitment of new officers or leaders is directly involved in the game of politics. It is on this background that one cannot divorce political activities among students in institutions of higher learning especially those in Benue state university, Makurdi. People determine their collective fate by ensuring the election of capable, transparent and credible individuals into various elective positions within their group or society. This they do by the exercise of their voting rights (franchise). In the exercise of their voting rights, members especially those active voters display certain observable voting behaviors.
This work therefore, calls for a profound and rigorous intelligent investigation into the voting behavior of some students in institutions of higher learning, especially those of the faculty of social sciences ofBenue State University,Makurdi.
Statement of the Problem
Student’s union elections (SUG) in institutions of higher learning have incessantly witnessed some ups and downs which could be negative or positive. It is believed that the outcome of any electoral process is the consequence of the voting behavior of the electorates. It is however disputable if Benue state university has had a successful students union government election devoid of complaints and malpractice as well as sentiments.Moreover, behavioral study is usually post factor analysis, therefore by implication an exercise in historical investigation or research. This type of study is placed at the centre of political analysis. In the world of Graham Wallas, the study of politics is nothing without the study of man because he thought that man’s personality and behavioral pattern dominates the development of any political action. The question is, how do students of the faculty of social sciences vote during SUG elections in Benue State University. Do they vote out of their volition? Or are there internal factors that determine their voting behaviors? All these shall be investigated in the course of this research work.
