ABSTRACT

This study used Ministers of the Universal Reformed Christian Church to analyze mishandling of monies in the church: challenges and potential. To accomplish this goal, three research questions and two research hypotheses were developed to drive this study. The information was gathered from both primary and secondary sources. The primary data were gathered using a well-structured questionnaire with two sections that was delivered to the Ministers of the Universal Reformed Christian Church. To assess the research topics, tables and basic percentages were employed, while the Chi-square statistical tool was used to test research hypotheses. The study demonstrates a considerable disparity between the financial management of the church as a religious institution and the effectiveness of internal controls and accountability systems in the church. The research concluded with various recommendations, including that mishandling of funds should not be accepted in the Universal Reformed Christian Church and that other Churches and Churches should focus on the great commission rather than fret or battle over cash.

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Money is raised to support the establishment of schools and education, to aid the poor, to build nonprofit organizations, to promote deserving causes, and to maintain life by responding to emergencies. To accomplish things, one needs money. Many people have incorrect ideas about fund raising. Money could be raised in many different ways, not just by begging.)Similar to how donations are essential to the work of the church, anyone can start out with a modest business and, with dedication and hard work, grow it into a significant source of income for themselves or their organization. However, serious consideration should be given to how money are taken from people and where the money raised goes without the extraordinary generosity of some members of the church and their friends, mission activities will be less effective and the church’s goals on reaching the widows and the needy may not be attained.

Fund raising has been defined as the process of soliciting and gathering “Voluntary contributions of money and or other resources.1 By requesting donations from individuals charitable foundations businesses or governmental agencies. It may also be a typical efforts made to gather money for nonprofit organisations through donations. Sometimes it is refers to the identification and solicitation of investors or other sources of capital for profit enterprises.2 Religiously fund raising consisted mostly of asking people to donate for building projects education scholarship orphanage hospitals’ bill special assistance evangelism and missions which is mostly done face to face or through distribution of en”elopes. The contemporary fund raising add a new look, by raising of funds online or on the net and to be transferred into the organisation’s bank account. There are also professional fund raisers that could be employed if an organisation so desire. But this is not done free of charge.

This study focuses on moral concerns associated with church fund raising, and the biblical response in the methodology is often applicable to any Christian organization seeking funding. Additionally, it contains details on various forms of fundraising, justifications for doing so, strategies for doing so, and the caliber of a fundraiser. Other terms used in this work that are synonymous with fund raising include alms giving, philanthropy, altruism, goodwill, humanitarianism, endowment, grant, subsidy, donation, benevolence, relief, welfare gift, charity, and contribution. It also includes a series of recommendations that serve as a guide for fundraisers.
