CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
The Nigeria petroleum industry has been confronted by two sapping over the years. The problems related to the activities of militants and oil pipe vandalism. While the former has significantly reduced in the after math of the Amnesty deal in 2009 by President Musa Ya’adua, the latter appears to have gone beyond repair both in incidence and effect.
Indeed, the occurrence of oil pipeline vandalization has been strongly demonstrated by its nexus with economic, environmental and humanitarian losses and consequences. It has been observed by the researcher through the residents and Pentecostal pastors of the churches located at Arepo Town especially Ebute area and its environments about the fluctuation of their peaceful living which adversely affect the growth of churches. And this has been a major concern to many inhabitants and pastors in this area despite all efforts.
However, it has been noticed that given all the parameter of church growth they find out that it did not yield positive result. Therefore, attention has to be drawn to oil pipe vandalization that may be responsible. As a result, the researcher is of the opinion that may be one of the contributing factors in Ebute and its environment at Arepo Town in Ogun State is the pronounced effect of oil pipe vandalization which in some cases has been observed. Now, the researcher believes that the thorough investigation is needed to ascertain whether this is so or not as to the case of Christ Apostolic Church, Triumphant Family and the residents of Ebute, Arepo Town, Ogun State. The researcher is interested because, as a potential pastor, it is his desire to make sure that the causes and effects of these vandalism are identified and the way they have deprived the society of her peace alongside with the growth of the church. Thus he considered that this research is worthwhile and that is why it is carried out.
- Statement of the Problem
It has been observed that some establishments and church founded / planted within the area of researcher’s case study have no appropriate map – out skills development that should enable them to cope with challenges of growth due to the unforeseen ugly occurrences that usually caused by vandals.
1.3. Purpose of the Study
The purpose of this research is to bring to the knowledge of the populace.
- What the concept of oil pipeline vandalization is.
- By identifying some of the causes of oil pipeline vandalism.
- By examining the effects of oil pipeline vandalization on the society and on the church growth.
- By considering biblical view of / on this.
- By proffering possible solutions to curbing or drastically reducing oil pipeline vandalization to its paucity.
1.4 Significance of the Study
The outcome of this research will.
- Educate the general public on the intricacies of oil pipeline vandalization and its attendant consequences on the society and the church.
- Also serve as a resource base to other scholars and researchers interested in carrying out further research in this field.
- Be of great help to Christ Apostolic church, Triumphant Family, Ebute, Arepo Town, Ogun State.
- Also be of great help to proprietor / proprietress, other establishments and society members of Arepo Town.
- Serve as suggested possible methods and methodologies to bring positive changes to solvocating and installmental dying church(es).
- Help non-challant attitude ministers in charge of church of God to understand satanic strategies that might be challenging the growth of the church through these means.
- Finally, this research work will serve as a resource material to other seminarians whose work will be related to this as it will reveal the cause and effect of oil pipeline vandalism on Nigeria society and church growth
1.5. Delimitation of the Study
The study is primarily concerned with the effect of oil pipe line vandalization on the society and the church growth. The scope of the study is limited to the methods employed in the case study and assessing the methods being used in Christ Apostolic church, Triumphant Family, Arepo.
1.6 Limitation of the Study
The researcher encounters some problems and difficulties in carrying out this research work. It was somehow difficult to gather information for this work, as some afraid of given the researcher listening ear let alone answering interview while some could not understand what influence of oil pipeline vandalization can have on the growth and expansion of contemporary church and society. It took some time to get some facts and materials for this work. And also some of the respondents were not faithful to the appointment schedule with the interviewer.
1.7 Research Procedure
The main instrument used in carrying out this study is historical approach; method used is based on literature works, consultation of other research based on the topic discussed, field work and library facilities. Questionnaire was distributed to the ministers in charge and other key members of the church to effectively carry out the research work.
1.8 Definition of Terms
For the purpose of this research, the following terms are defined as followings:
Effect:
This is state of being operative or functional; operations or execution; accomplishment or fulfillment.
Crude oil:
This is also referred to as petroleum and it is a resource that is drilled-up throughout world. It provide energy resources when refined and processed; It also provide the foundation for many product including plastic and petro-chemicals in addition to fuel for cars, diesel fuel for tucks, kerosene, Gas, Gasoline.
Vandalization:
It is an action involving deliberate destruction of or damage to public or private properties. The term includes criminal damage such as graffiti and defacement directed towards properties without permission of the owner.
