Abstract
This study sought to examine the role of personal evangelism on church growth in Nigeria. Since the ultimate goal of evangelism is for men to be saved and added to the Church, which is the earthly Kingdom of God, this is why. Men must first hear the gospel through evangelism in order for them to put their faith in God. When the gospel’s purpose is fulfilled, the Church expands as a result. Sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ with people is known as personal evangelism. It is communicating who Jesus is and how it is possible to develop a connection with Him via both words and deeds. Consider evangelism in the context of your life’s journeys. Personal evangelism is simply the honor of sharing in another person’s spiritual journey, learning how God is at work, and learning how we might participate. The study demonstrates that a Christian in love with Christ hardly ever ceases to ponder and speak about their beloved. An individual who has truly encountered Jesus Christ displays the same compulsion described in Acts 4:20. The article comes to the conclusion that personal evangelism is not only a process of explaining the truth until a person understands it and then chooses to believe in Jesus. It was advised that Christians should use every opportunity to be enthusiastic about the lives of the unbelievers and to really pray for church development through personal evangelism. All churches must establish long-term, active, specialized evangelistic teams for streets, houses, marketplaces, buses, and hospitals. The importance of maintaining evangelistic teams at all costs must be emphasized in sermons about evangelism that must be delivered frequently.
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
The Lord’s greatest commandment is to spread the gospel to every nation.
All Christians have a responsibility to share the gospel with the world. God’s favor may be taken away from us if we are careless in this regard. When we examine how Jesus delivered the gospel, we discover that He personally met each person He called to become a disciple. People who had a personal encounter with Jesus went on to become evangelists, spread the gospel, and grow the church. Jesus established the church to carry on His mission after He ascended to heaven. As a result, the church’s purpose is to spread the good news. It is becoming more and more clear that many Christians today are not overly concerned with the salvation of non-Christians, especially when it comes to personal evangelism. This is apparent in the way believers act and in the things they value. Personal evangelism receives little attention in the broader environment and focus of Christian activities like prayer, revival meetings, and other well-attended programs. It is clear that the instruction Jesus provided to his followers to be “fishers of men” is either being completely disregarded or is only being applied to a select few. The individual believer does not appear to be involved in the Master’s affairs.
To evangelize, according to Parker (1961, 37–38), is to present Christ Jesus in the power of the Holy Spirit so that men will come to put their trust in God through Christ, accept Him as their Saviour, and serve Him as their King in the fellowship of His Church. Parker attempts to provide a practical definition of evangelism. And the ultimate goal of evangelism is for men to be saved and added to the Church, which is the earthly Kingdom of God. It is impossible to overstate the importance of personal evangelism and soul winning in the modern world. There are many people who would rather die in their sins as each day goes by. Whether every close relative, friend, and acquaintance has heard the good news of Jesus Christ is the repentant question that every Christian needs to respond to. Jesus instructed the disciples to pray that the Father would send extra laborers to the field because the harvest was already ripe when He realized the size of the task. There are so many individuals on the street whose lives the gospel must touch. Every devout Christian who is assured of his place in the afterlife must bear the burden of soul winning. God’s intention is for the church to serve as a conduit for the Gospel to reach the entire world. “Just as the Father has sent me, so send do send you,” Jesus told the disciples. Christians have been tasked with making disciples of all countries to the ends of the earth.
Personal evangelism appears to be on the decline in today’s church. People don’t seem willing to communicate their beliefs with their acquaintances, colleagues, family members, or even their parents. According to a recent Barna survey on evangelism, as people in the United States increasingly adopt components of postmodern thinking, Christian evangelism is becoming an endangered activity. This is due to the fact that postmodernism prioritizes tolerance and individual truth, and hence opposes evangelistic efforts to persuade others about the Gospel. One could argue that evangelism in Nigeria appears to be no different. This is due to a shift in cultural attitude, particularly in the postmodern viewpoint. Despite the emphasis on tolerance and diversity of viewpoints, postmodernism also claims that there are no absolute moral or spiritual standards that are fit for everyone, and hence opposes forceful evangelistic attempts as an attempt to ‘impose’ one person’s position on another. Today’s lack of fervor for personal evangelism in Nigeria is likely due to mistaken priorities rather than postmodernism’s influence.
We must not overlook any of the tactics utilized by Jesus and his disciples in their day. The characteristics and benefits of preaching the gospel to individuals include the opportunity for evangelists to meet with persons face to face and thus create a more intimate relationship with them. Individual gospel preaching has been found to be more effective than crowd preaching in drawing people to the Lord and adds more to church growth in the long run. More focus is placed on praying for and holding church programs aimed at satisfying the needs of the church and its members. The church should be more concerned with seeking first the kingdom of God, and then the other things will fall into place. The preaching of the gospel by every Christian through personal evangelism must be prioritized by both clergy and laity.
Jesus told his disciples to preach the gospel from Jerusalem to Judea and all the way to the ends of the earth. Every Christian has his or her own Jerusalem, which is their immediate surroundings. From there, the preaching of the gospel must begin. When believers are inspired to go out and win souls wherever they find themselves, as the disciples did, it leads to huge church growth because more non-believers are born again, and the Church of Christ grows massively.
