Drug abuse and dependence otherwise known as substance or chemical abuse is a disorder that is characterized by a destructive pattern of applying drugs thereby leading to significant problems or disorder. This devastating problem cuts across every strata of human society but mostly dangerous among our innocent adolescence in Nigeria. “Drug abuse” an extreme desire to obtain and use increasing amount of one or more substance, this include alcohol, nicotine, marijuana, cigarettes, codeine and other substances which are harmful to the health of the individual. When considering drug abuse one should be able to differentiate it from drugs dependence or drugs addiction, which is the physical dependence on drugs to function.

The rate at which drugs are being abused in this 21st century has led many scholars and writers to review the subject matter, but only few have been able to address the fact that, anyone can be a victim of drug abuse irrespective of age, sex, status and religious stand in the society.

The sole aim of this article is to outline and address the numerous effects associated with drug and substance abuse in Nigeria. The devastating rate at which drug addiction has cut into some people’s culture and nature in Nigeria is alarming and need urgent response from the federal and state government.

It’s a pity that in some part of Nigeria, substance like codeine, nicotine, marijuana, tramadol, and cocaine seems legalized even when such right is not yet in our constitution. The recent introduction of shisha in Nigeria has made some young ladies popularly known as “slay queens” smoke their heart, lever and lungs to death. Research has proven that smoking one blow from shisha pipe is equivalent to a stick of cigarette, but ignorantly our youths smoke 4-6 coals of shisha flavor per night with joy and excitement.

It is believed that the problem of drug abuse is as old as man existence and am not here to argue such belief but, no society is exempted from the negative effects of illegal drugs and substance.

It is on record that Nigeria flagged off its narcotic control efforts in 1935 when the Dangerous drugs Ordinance was enacted to control drug trafficking and abuse. According to (NDLEA, 2009), the problem of drugs began to assume very worrisome dimensions in Nigeria at the end of the second world war following the return of some Nigerian soldiers from mainly, Burma, India, where they had fought the war. One of the negative consequences of the war was the return of the soldiers with some seeds of cannabis sativa, also known as Indian hemp, which they in turn experimented and discovered that the illicit plant could do well in some parts of the country. With time, the cultivation of cannabis sativa began to grow and so was the trafficking and abuse of the cannabis plant.
Drug barons soon discovered that the geographical location of Nigeria, its thick population, bustling commerce, and vibrant air transportation hold so much attraction for a thriving drug business. This led to the experimentation with category ‘A’ drugs such as cocaine, heroin and other psychotropic substances; a situation that has made the country a drug trafficking/transit point. In order to address this growing problem of illicit drugs, Nigeria has remained proactive in its counter-narcotic initiatives.

A new smoking trend arrived Nigeria and was socially acceptable and believed to helps people to chill – but unknown to many is that it’s more dangerous than they would like to believe. The dramatic explosion in #Shisha smoking in Africa’s cities from Kampala to Abuja, Jonas burg to Zanzibar cannot be overemphasis,

“W.H.O research has proven that the amount of smoke inhaled in one hour of #Shisha smoking is the same as smoking 100-200 cigarettes. People smoke #Shisha for longer periods than they smoke cigarettes. Just 1 puff of inhaled #Shisha smoke is like smoking a whole cigarette”. Local doctors across Africa have also joined in the chorus of condemnation. #Shisha comes in various flavors and because of the flavors, the sweet aroma & nice taste, there’s a gross misconception that #Shisha is NOT harmful, unlike cigarettes.

#Shishasmoking is equivalent to smoking tobacco, sometimes mixed with fruits or molasses sugar, through a bowl & a hose with a mouthpiece. The hose connects the flavored smoke from substances being burnt in the bowl to the lungs of the smoker through the mouthpiece #Shisha pipes use tobacco sweetened with fruits or molasses sugar which makes #Shisha smoking a more pleasurable experience than cigarettes. The popular #Shisha flavors include apple, mango, strawberries, coconut & mint. This gives the smoked tobacco a sweet smell & smooth taste. The World Health Organization says that smoking a #Shisha for an hour is worse than smoking 100 to 200 cigarettes. It’s hard to imagine but it’s true. Just one hour of #Shisha is same as smoking about 100-200 cigarettes. Yet people smoke #Shisha for hours. The wrong assumption that #Shisha smoking is harmless compared to cigarettes is the reason why many engage in reckless #Shisha smoking. Just like cigarettes, #Shisha smoke contains toxic agents like tobacco, nicotine, tar, Carbon monoxide, and heavy metals like Arsenic. The nicotine content of #Shisha is very addictive and may lead to a smoker being dependent.

This led the researchers into carrying out various research on the adverse effect of drug abuse in Nigeria such as;

This study explored the contributory factors from social media in the fight against drug abuse in Nigeria. Since the mass media is a major agent of socialization and tool for social change especially now that people depend on message from the media. The potential power of the mass media help solve social problems. It is a fact that, television, radio, and print advertising can entice people to buy a wide range of products and services, and newspaper messages and advertisement influence our ideas, values and behaviour. The researcher highlighted some of the sub-objectives to include;

i) To examine if mass media does educate and enlighten the general public on drug abuse.

ii) To know if mass media awareness campaign on drug abuse have reduced the unlawful use of drug in our society

iii) To know if there is problem facing the mass media in creating awareness on drug abuse

The design survey method was adopted for this study, and simple percentage and statistic tool was used in analyzing the data obtained.

This study “Impact of awareness campaign on drug abuse among undergraduates” is to evaluate and measure how effective these campaigns have been in the fight against drug abuse. Also, to answer questions like “has the message content of the campaign been accepted by undergraduates of Nigerian universities? The researcher highlighted some of the sub-objectives to include;

i) To find out the impact of campaigns on drug abuse, how it has helped in improving the situation among students in campuses in Nigeria.

ii) To find out the reasons why students indulge in drug abuse and to assess the extent of the students involvement in drug abuse.

iii) To identify the major types of drug commonly abused by undergraduates in Nigerian campus.

The design survey method was adopted for this study, and simple percentage and statistic tool was used in analyzing the data obtained.
