CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.0    BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The development of the Christian community and the wider world is greatly influenced by pastoral ministry. It is important to understand that gospel preachers are not regular folks who go to regular jobs. They are charged with the task of molding men into the full image of Christ. Pastoral letters are primarily addressed to pastors and contain detailed instructions for the church, members’ conduct, and ministries. This is done to serve as a reminder to them of their role in the body of Christ and their divine calling. There have been many ministers throughout history whose lives and behaviour characterized pastoral ministry and those whose lives have done nothing but harm to it. Notwithstanding these difficulties, pastoral care continues to be characterized by integrity. An analysis of Titus 2:6–8 with a focus on pastoral ministry integrity is the subject of this study.

One of the most important qualities of a strong leader is integrity. It refers to the idea of consistency in behavior, ideas, techniques, measures, expectations, and results. It suggests a strong commitment to acting morally, no matter what the situation, and for the correct reasons. Individuals who live honorably are impervious to corruption and are unable to betray the confidence of people who have trusted them. Integrity is characterized by doing the right thing, no matter the consequences. The worst sin a leader can commit is to betray the confidence of his followers. Today, the harm done by a lack of integrity is evident everywhere, but particularly in Christendom. Nowadays, among ministers of God, it has tragically become routine to hear of various matters that are immoral or criminal.

There is a significant expense associated with the widespread lack of integrity in today’s environment. Loss of trust is the cost that must be paid. For pastoral administration to be effective, trust is a requirement. Despite these difficulties, the need of honesty in pastoral administration cannot be overstated.

The word integrity is a military term that was first used in a Roman army tradition that has been passed down to us. The Roman army’s breastplate inspections are documented in the ARW in great detail. It was rumored that during the morning inspections, the inspecting Centurion would approach each legionnaire and allow the soldier to strike the armor on the breastplate that covered his heart with his right fist in order to determine whether the breastplate was genuine and in good condition as well as whether it could shield the heart from sword thrusts and arrow strikes. According to Walker, the soldier would yell “integritas,” which is Latin for “material totality, completion, and entirety,” as he hammered his armor in the Ancient Roman period. Walker alludes to integrity in the ARW in terms of donning armor, developing completeness and wholeness in one’s character, and the soundness of one’s armor.

1.1 STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

People’s misunderstandings about integrity are a genuine problem, especially in pastoral ministry. People frequently claim to be men of integrity or men of their word, but their actions frequently go against what they profess. Many individuals mistakenly believe that integrity can only be demonstrated via words and not through deeds. Furthermore, there have been a lot of misunderstandings about integrity in pastoral ministry over the years, such as “do as I say, but don’t do as I do,” “that’s how I choose to run my own ministry,” and similar statements. The goal of this study project is to better understand what integrity in pastoral ministry means in light of Titus 2:6–8 and how it relates to the African setting.

1.2 SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY

The goal of this study is to aid Christians in general and pastors in pursuing and upholding integrity in both their personal and professional lives. In order to build a clear distinction between individuals who abuse integrity in pastoral ministry and in Christian living, this should make them wary of integrity in their day-to-day lives.

The pastor as well as the entire Christendom will benefit more from this research by having a clearer understanding of what integrity, pastoral care, and ministry imply. Several of the key words used in the book will become more obvious as a result of the investigation. Throughout the course of this inquiry, words like exhort, self-control, good, irredeemable, bad, and similar terms will be examined.

1.3 SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF STUDY

Many studies on integrity have been conducted, according to records. Nonetheless, the integrity of a gospel minister within the context of his pastoral ministry will be the main focus of this study. This will consider observed and documented practices in ministry. The research is limited in that it focuses on pastoral ministry as described in Titus 2:6-8, despite other Bible passages that briefly illustrate pastoral integrity from a variety of perspectives. Yet, the researcher won’t let this stop them from using those passages to help readers better understand the material.
