                                              INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF STUDY

Laterites and lateritic soils have over the years been given increased attention by soil engineers because of their wide spread distribution and engineering application, it been observed that in Nigerian roads, road construction is mostly done using lateritic soils as base and sub base material.

Laterites, though abundant in many countries have varied properties from place to place. This makes their performance diverse and unpredicted (Gidigasu, 1976). If the surfacing material accumulates small surface water due to poor drainage, the water penetrates to the base and sub-base, thereby giving it a bad look. The water percolates the sub-base and base material, dissolving them, thereby causing big damage to the road. The base and sub-base material dissolves because of high percentage of clay soil present or as a result of improper stabilization method. Many of this defect can and have become by the addition of stabilizing agents to improve the Engineering properties of the soil such as the Volume Stability , Strength and Stress-Strain properties ,Permeability and Durability.

Much research has been carried out on the stabilization of soil, especially on Laterites using Cement, Lime, Fly-ash and Bitumen depending on the type of soil and site condition. This search focuses on the use of Cement with Asphalt-Emulsion to stabilize Lateritic soils for use as road Foundation and construction materials. This will contribute to the sustainable road maintenance and development.

1.2      AIMS AND OBJECTIVE OF RESEARCH

The aim of this research is to analyse the effect and efficiency of Cement on Asphalt –Emulsion Stabilized soil obtained from University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, which may be used for road pavement construction. This research is carried out to obtain the following objectives:

  1. To determine the engineering properties of the  Natural soil Samples collected
  2. To determine the efficiency of cement as an additive on Asphalt Emulsion Stabilized Lateritic Soil.
  • To determine the efficiency of Asphalt Emulsion as an Additive on a Natural Soil Samples.

1.3      RESEARCH SIGNIFICANCE

This study is considered very important as it investigates the effect of both the used of Asphalt Emulsion and cement as additives in the Stabilization. This research is meant to evaluate and compare the Engineering characteristics of Natural soil and that Stabilized with Asphalt Emulsion and Cement. If the required objectives such as improvement of Volume Stability, Strength, Permeability and Durability are met using Asphalt Emulsion and Cement, it would be a breakthrough in the applicability of Asphalt Emulsion and Cement in the construction industries, thereby saving time and cost in the road construction.

1.4      LOCATION OF STUDY

The soil sample use for this research work is lateritic soil and sample by method of disturbed sampling and the Location is University of Uyo, Main Campus, Nwaniba, Uyo.  Akwa Ibom State, South-South Region, Nigeria.

1.5      SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF STUDY

This study is an investigation on the applicability of Cement on an Asphalt Emulsion Stabilized Lateritic Soil. The Work is limited to Lateritic soil sample collected from the University of Uyo, Main Campus only. Although any other soil with the same chemical characteristic as he one studied can also benefit from the result. The foreseeable limitations of this study shall include the unwillingness of the respondents to take part in the survey. It will also be limited by paucity of data, logistics problems like transport, attitude of respondents in the filling and returning of questionnaires administered.
