1.0     INTRODUCTION

Environment is everything that is around us both the living and non-living things that an organism interacts with or has an effect on it. This includes physical, chemical and other natural forces living things live in their environment. In environment there are different interaction between animals, plants insects, soil, water and other living and non-living things.

Pollution can take the form of chemical substances or energy. Such as noise, heat and light, it is the  introduction of contaminations into the natural environment that cause adverse change, the components of pollution can be either foreign substances, energies or naturally occurring contaminants. (Merriam Webster, 2010).

Environmental pollution is the release of chemical wastes that causes detrimental effects on the environment while physical sources, such as noise and light, of pollution are important, people most often notice the damage of chemical pollution on animals and plant life.

Environmental pollutant is the discharge of material in any physical state. It is one of the greatest challenges that the world is facing today, have developed maximum exposure values for pollutants.

Many regulate atmospheric emission to keep their levels compostable with environmental equilibrium and human health with regard to climate change, environmental pollution is the defining issue, limiting anthropogenic green house gas emissions is acknowledged by scientists as fundamental to mitigating the effect of global climate change (Whittenberger, 1989).

A pollutant is any substance or form of energy which has the ability to pollute the environment, causing harmful effects and damaging nature in general. It might affect natural health etc. Pollutants are either natural or manmade.

There are different forms of soil pollution which include; Air pollution, light pollution, littering, noise pollution, plastic pollution, soil contamination, radioactive contamination, thermal pollution, usually pollution and water pollution.

Air pollution is the sources of soil pollutant that comes from both natural and human – made (anthropogenic) sources. However, globally human-made pollutants from combustion, construction, mining, agriculture and warfare are increasingly significant in the air pollution equation.

The effects of soil pollutant on soil micro biology is the heavy soil contaminated soil have a negative effect soil microbial properties, such as the underlying soil respiration rate and enzyme activity that depends on soil pH, organic matter and other chemical properties. Heavy metals have a significant effect on soil enzyme activity. On plant growth effect of heavy metal polluted soil on plant growth. For instance, a reduction in the number of beneficial soil microorganisms due to high metal concentration may lead to decrease in organic matter decomposition leading to a decline in soil nutrients. (Alloway, 1990)..

To prevention soil pollution, there is a need to make stringent rules for reducing soil pollution and preventing it completely, considering the far- reaching effect soil pollution, control over it is absolutely necessary, the existence of animals kingdom and plant world is based on soil. The soil is the wealth of the farmers, its deprivation of properties is only a loss farmers but to the Country’s economy, human health, organisms vegetation too. The many ways to control soil pollution which is domestic waste control is increasing due to accommodation of domestic waste. There is a need to work according to a well planted strategy. Most in household waste is organic waste, to control it. We must store our food more efficiently in the fridge.

In this way, we can reduce the waste of food as well as reduce the production of organic waste to prevent these harmful substances from getting into the soil. In the hierarchy of controls, pollution prevent and waste minizaiton are more desirable than pollution control. In the field of land development, low impact development is a similar technique from the prevention of urban runoff.

1.1     AIMS

The aims of this research project are:-

  1. To determine the effect of common environmental pollutants on soil bacteriology.
  2. To determine the effect of common environmental pollutants on plant growth.
