INTRODUCTION

STUDENTS INDUSTRIAL WORK EXPERIENCE SCHEME

The Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) was established by the Industrial Training Fund (ITF), introduced and instituted into the high or school of learning in 1973 to bridge the gap between theoretical and practical aspect of learning and to solve the problem of inadequate skills.

The Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is a Skills Training Programme designed to expose and prepare Students of Universities, Polytechnics, Colleges of Technology, Colleges of Agriculture and Colleges of Education for the Industrial Work situation they are likely to meet after graduation. The scheme also affords students the opportunity of familiarizing and exposing themselves to the needed experience in handling equipment and machinery that are usually not available in their institutions and the skills experienced acquired remain a life-long asset and will become relevant in their working career.

 

OBJECTIVES OF THE SIWES PROGRAMME

The objectives of SIWES programme are:

Prepare students for work situations they are likely to meet after graduation.

Expose students to work methods and techniques in handling equipment and machineries that may not be available in their various institutions.

Provide an avenue for students in higher institutions to acquire industrial skills and experiences in their course of study.

Enlist and strengthen employer’s involvements in the entire educational process of preparing university graduates for employments in industries.

 

CONCLUSION

SIWES has enriched and balanced my theoretical knowledge with real practical knowledge of some of the biochemical and clinical techniques taught in the class. It exposed me to certain knowledge about disease conditions which are related to biochemistry and how they can be remedied by applying appropriate biochemical principles.

Apart from the acquisition of practical experience, it has also afforded me the opportunity to acquire basic administrative skills which will help me to become a good professional upon graduation.

 

RECOMMENDATIONS

Indeed, the students’ industrial work experience scheme is a strong tool in the acquisition of industrial skill. It serves as the first work experience of undergraduates in their field. Practical knowledge is also drawn from it. It is therefore recommended that students must avail themselves of this opportunity to take advantage of SIWES program to build up their experience. Students are also recommended to take the program serious so as to achieve the bridging of the gap between the theory and practice. However, it is also recommended that funds should e made available to students by the government and institution to subsidize their transport fare and other welfares.
