- Background of the Study
According to Femi (2017), Tradescantia pallida leaf has become an important area of study because of its relevance to humanity. Femi observed that the leaves consist of a short leaf sheath (7-10 mm long) which encloses the stem and a spreading leaf blade. The leaf blades (3-7 cm long and 1.5-3 cm wide) are egg-shaped in outline (ovate) or broadly lance-shaped (lanceolate) with entire margins and narrow to a point at the tip (acute or acuminate apex). Femi further observed that they are green and/or purplish with broad silvery stripes on the upper surface and darker purple on the undersides. The leaf sheaths are hairy (ciliate) along their margins and the leaf blades are hairless (glabrous).
While Gilbert (2015) noted that Tradescantia is a genus of 75 species of herbaceous perennial wildflowers in the family Commelinaceae, native to the New World from southern Canada to northern Argentina, including the West Indies.
Members of the genus are known by the common names spiderwort or Indian paint. They were introduced into Europe as ornamental plants in the 17th century and are now grown as such in many parts of the world. Subsequently, some species have become naturalized in various regions of Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia, as well as on some oceanic islands.
Tradescantia are weakly-upright to scrambling plants, growing 30–60 cm tall (0.98–1.97 ft), and are commonly found individually or in clumps in wooded areas and open fields. A number of species have flowers that unfold in the morning and close when the sun shines on the flowers in the afternoon but can remain open on cloudy days until evening. Three species known colloquially as “Wandering Jew“, one native to eastern Mexico, also belong to the genus Tradescantia. Other names used for various species include spider-lily, cradle-lily, oyster-plant and flowering inch plant.
The genus is of interest to cytogenetics because of evolutionary changes in the structure and number of their chromosomes. In addition to their use as ornamentals, Tradescantia is of economic importance because a number of species have become pest to cultivated crops. They have also been used as bioindicators for the detection of environmental, Jones, R. N. (2008).
Whereas Jerilin (2018) observed that Tradescantia pallida is a species of spiderwort (a genus of New World plants) more commonly known as wandering jew or walking jew, a name it shares with the closely related species T. fluminensis and T. zebrina. Other common names include purple secretia, purple-heart, and purple queen. It is native to the Gulf Coast region of eastern Mexico. Palmer collected the type specimen near Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas in 1907.
Dada (2016) observed that the study of anatomy aid in having full knowledge of tradescantia pallida leaf because anatomy is the identification and description of the structures of living things of which Tradescantia pallida leaf is among.
The study of anatomy goes back over 2,000 years, to the Ancient Greeks. It can be divided into three broad areas: Human anatomy, zootomy, or animal anatomy, and phytotomy, which is plant anatomy. Therefore, it has facilitated the study of plants and making them known to the society and aid in classifying and identifying them based on their species and what they stand for.
- Statement of the Problem
The issues involving anatomical study of Tradescantia pallida leaf has become a case of academic discussion in most educational institutions due to its importance to humanity and to the society at large. Yet, it has not lived up to its expectations due to improper handling of Tradescantia pallida leaf by most biologists and other related field informants. Lack of effective laboratory analysis of this study has formed part of the problem. Coupled with the fact that much work has been done on the anatomical study of Traescantia pallida leaf to ascertain its full importance to humanity. The lack of adequate and needed laboratory equipment for the experimentation of anatomical study of Tradescantia pallida leaf have constituted another problem.
1.3 General Objective of Study
This main objective of the study is to examine the anatomical study of Tradescantia pallida leaf.
1.4 Specific Objectives of Study
(i) To determine epidermal characteristics of Tradescantia pallida leaf.
1.5 Purpose of the Study
The purpose of the study is to access the upper and lower surface of the anatomy on the study of Tradescantia pallida leaf.
1.6 Significance of the Study
The study will be of great significant to the researcher as it will enable her in having full knowledge of anatomical study of Tradescantia pallida leaf. The study will stimulate the interest of medical students and other concerned scientists on the issues involving the anatomical study of Tradescantia pallida leaf. It will also suggest some solutions on how to solve problems arising from anatomical study of Tradescantia pallida leaf. The study will also serve as a point of reference or point of criticism to other researchers who may wish to embark on a study of this nature. To the lecturers, the study will become a research and teaching material to them which will enable them to highlight more about the study.
