- Background to the Study
The attempt to process students’ results with minimum or no error has been noted to be of major concern to parties involved (Ukaoha, 2014). Many schools have their own system to manage students profile and assessments. Common practice is by recording the student information in record books (Bald and Ruaice, 2013).
Students’ information is obtained from the registration from completed by the parents/guardians when the register their children/wards for first time in school. This practice has some weaknesses such as the longer time to search the student profile, the possibility of misplacement of records books and vulnerability of student record to be accessed by unauthorized person.
In Akwa Ibom State public secondary schools, several assessments are prepared to evaluate student performance. Types of assessments that are common to all the secondary schools are assignments 1st,2nd,3rd test and examinations. At the end of each assignment, test and examination, the class teacher records students’ marks and grades in the record books. After that, the class teacher needs to determine students’ position in class based on their performances.
However, it takes time to do these tasks because they need to formulate their own calculation for class position. These tasks will be much easier if all calculations for class position can be automatically done when the teacher enter assignment, tests and examination marks.
According to Anulika, Bala and Nyap (2014), students’ result is the criteria for the measurement of students’ capability in terms of academic performance in the school. It is used to measure a students’ capability in each subject offered by the student, because the student result is very important to the student and parents/guardians, there is need the to avoid common mistakes made during the result processing. This can easily be achieved by an automated result processing system. This system will help school administration to manage student profile, class teacher to manage students’ assessments and education board to access students for state and national competitions.
Imagine a teacher compiling 50 students result which is the standard number of students for a class in public secondary schools in Akwa Ibom State (AKSMEB,2004). The teachers undergo stress and get busy calculating (addition and division) each students test and examination scores. For every student, the teacher will add what the student scored in 1st,2nd and 3rd test and examination to get the total for each subject, the teacher will repeat the process for the number of subjects offered by each student just to get all the total score for each subject. To get the average scores for each student, the teacher will have to add all the total scores for each subject offered by the student and then divide by the total number of subjects offered by the student. The same process is repeated for the remaining 49 students. The class. After that, the teacher now orders the average scores to rank the students position in the class, it does not end there. The teacher will also enter the record into each student Report card then create a broad sheet called Master sheet for all the students records for future references. This is stressful and time consuming. In order to manage this computation and to make teaching less stressful, make their job enjoyable and to make them direct their attention on teaching is very easy with computerized system. But on the other hand, imagine one teacher processing 2000- 5000 students’ result from various classes with little effort of just entering students score as soon it has been conducted and results generated automatically for printing no matter the size of the students in class/school. In each term, the system generates test and examination scores sheet with students names arranged accordingly with column and rows created for each subject scores entering. This is given to the class teacher to fill in scores after the test or examination is conducted. It will be taken back to the system for entry and after that with just a click, the result is ready for printing.
Most authorities and management of secondary schools in Akwa Ibom State thinks that the use of computer in school administration is only for the production of applications, memos and letters. Use of computers in schools cannot be over emphasized, it can help in administering the school during the admission, registration, scheduling, storing of officials and students records, etc.
Investigation revealed that the manual method adopted in results processing pose some problems in most secondary schools in Akwa Ibom State (Akin 2009). These problems can be arranged under the following headings: poor security of documents, untimely processing of results and production of inaccurate results. The aim of this research is to develop a web-based result processing system that will ameliorate on the short coming encountered in the students’ result processing in Akwa Ibom State public secondary schools such as the stress of compiling students’ result by the teachers and errors generated in the results due to human factors thereby generating result that is accurate, timely and error free.
All efforts in this research work is geared towards the gathering of sufficient information that would help in making useful suggestions for the alleviation of manual processing of results in public secondary schools, considering the processing speed, storage and retrieve of information facilities, to provide the management with a tool to provide results for evaluations. Result will be processed and presented at the click of a button. Hence computer becomes indispensable in results processing.
1.1 Statement of the problem
The lack of a web-based result processing system for public secondary schools in Akwa Ibom State poses some problems. These problems can be arranged under the following headings; poor security of documents, untimely processing of results and production of inaccurate results. Moreover, the manual (paper) result processing material cost may be increasing due to increase in the price of paper and printing materials. It is against this background that this study sought to design a web-based result processing system for public secondary schools in Akwa Ibom State.
1.2 Purpose of the study
The main purpose of this study was to design and evaluate a web-based result processing system for public secondary schools in Akwa Ibom State. Specifically this study sought to:
- Enable result computation with lesser human intervention by automating all the concerned activities.
- Enable computerized statistical Analysis of Data which will facilitate the management to see trends in result at various levels, as to make strategic decision in favour of the institutions and students.
- Enable storage of students’ data to help in minimizing the redundancy in database in addition maintain consistency, integrity and security of data.
- Enable modification to suite any kind of record keeping and data processing because of its flexibility.
- Enable continuous records keeping for students’ assessment and evaluation.
1.3 Significant of the study
The study would be beneficiary to teachers, to process and store students’ result with ease and less stress.
The web-based result processing system would afford parents/guardians quick and easy access to their children/wards result at a click of button.
The web-based result processing system would give government direct access to choose institutions and students based on their performances for public competitions/ representations.
It will help keep continuous records for student assessment and evaluation.
The study was delimited to the design and evaluation of a web-based result processing system for public secondary schools in Akwa Ibom State. The study would only take into consideration students in Senior Secondary School in Akwa Ibom State public secondary schools (A case study of Community Secondary School, Aka Offot, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State).
