Abstract
This study examined the effects of indiscipline on academic performance of students in Kaduna State College of Education Gidan-Waya. A descriptive survey research design was adopted using questionnaire as the main instrument. 171 respondents were randomly selected from some departments in the College. The hypotheses raised were tested at 0.05 level of significance. From the findings, parental attitude, government nonchalant attitude, teachers’ influence and peer-group influence among others were found to be responsible for indiscipline among college students. It is therefore recommended that parents should train their children and wards at homes in terms of knowledge acquisition and development of good character, virtues and religion. Parents should educate their children and provide emotional security, safety comfort, love and respect for elders in order to enable them to portrait good character to the society and parents should not over-pamper the children. Lecturers should be patient, kind, sympathetic and helpful to students’ personal problems. Lecturers should invite the parents or inform them whenever a trace of misconduct is noticed. Students should not form bad group/gangs e.g cultism in campus.
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Secondary school education in Nigeria is meant to prepare the teenagers for valuable living conditions within the society and training for further education in order to live a valuable living conditions within any community and contribute towards the social, economic, and political development of the nation. The critical tools used in the transformation of the individual in particular and the society in general is education. The trend in secondary schools in the present time is indiscipline of all sorts. Indiscipline in schools contributes to lack of success in one’s life, if allowed to linger on for a long time. Indiscipline cuts across all aspects of human environment and has caused a lot of setbacks in schools and the society at large. Indiscipline is like a cankerworm that has eaten deep into the fabric of the society. It breeds lawlessness and lawlessness breeds crime, and consequently self-destruction.
Indiscipline to a lay man is the direct opposite of discipline i.e lack of discipline (Timothy 2008). Indiscipline refers to improper behavior exhibit by an individual or group of people within the School or community. Olusegun (2005) defined indiscipline as the improper training of the mind and body which can produce desired control necessary for an individual to perform the positive roles required for the achievement of organization or community goals and aspirations. Johnson (2010) pointed out that indiscipline manifests in various ways such as disorderliness, smoking, examination malpractices, bullying, disobedience stealing and dishonesty.
The Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary (2000), defines indiscipline as lack of control in the behaviour of a group of people. In other words, it is the inability of a person to live in accordance with rules. Indiscipline is regarded as an act that does not conform to the societal values or norms.
Zubaida (2009) identifies various forms of indiscipline among the secondary school students such as truancy, lateness to school, cultism, drug abuse, insulting/assaulting, stealing, rioting, and many other antisocial vices. According to Zubaida (2009) and Eyinade (1999), a number of these acts of indiscipline were directed against constituted authorities and established rules. An example of this is refusal to wear the right school uniform and going out of bounds without permission. The respect which teachers command among students had been seriously worn-off. And some teachers have not done much to help the situation by their actions. This problem has turned to a national issue.
The unfortunate situation was lamented over by Obateru in Ekpo (1996). He pointed out that the infiltrations of secret cults into secondary schools were causing school heads nightmares. Student’s indiscipline has led to the loss of many lives either through drug additions, riots and violence demonstration, abortion or robbery. Many students today engage in one or more of these activities, indiscipline among students has a lot of negative effects on educational system and learning. Many academic calendars are being disrupted, school properties worth thousands of naira are being destroyed as a result of antisocial behaviour exhibited by students in secondary schools. Many students in secondary schools now form themselves into gangs (mafia groups). This becomes a means whereby the students are exposed to drug use and later become addicted, leading subsequently to initiation into secret cults.
Our leaders in the past have tried to remedy this situation but the problem proved not to be solved. One of the cardinal objectives of Education as spelt out in the National Policy on Education (2004) revised, is to inculcate right type of values and attitudes for the survival of the individual and Nigerian society. Onyije and Ojedapo (2010) identify some factors that cause indiscipline among students such as government nonchalant attitudes to education, parental factors and teachers’ attitude. Therefore there is need to get at the root causes of indiscipline amongst the secondary school students with a view to finding a solution. In this light the researchers concern is to find out factors responsible for indiscipline among secondary school students. With a view to provide solutions in order to make our educational system what it ought to be.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The problem of indiscipline in our secondary schools today has persisted over the years. These acts have either been carried out individually by the students or as a group which result to rioting or revolts. There is no doubt that students indiscipline generally militates against effective teaching and learning and production of useful acceptable members of the society. It is therefore, observed that some parents appear to have denied their parental roles or responsibilities towards their children. If the teachers are frustrated and lack motivation in themselves, they are not likely to motivate other to learn or occupy their time in productive education. The Government contributes to indiscipline by not providing adequate facilities/equipment in the school. Community/Society influence contributes to indiscipline among secondary school students due to economic recession. Peer-group influence contributes to indiscipline among students in the form of uncomfortable environment where the students are scared of their parents. In schools nowadays especially in public colleges in Nigeria, students threatens to beat up their lecturers, students now smoke within the csmpus, rape, involve in cultism and some other immoral act, all this contribute to the lower standard Nigeria education system has in the world, this research is however carried out to find out the effect of indiscipline on academic performance of students.

Researcher’s Commitment: The researcher, being of full time student spent most of her time on other academic activities such as test, class work, assignment, examination etc which takes average focus from this study.
Inadequate Materials: Scarcity of material is also another hindrance. The researcher finds it difficult to lay hands on several required material which could contribute immensely to the success of this research work.
Financial constraint: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).
